For decades, the Alaskan Way Viaduct has been a fixture along the downtown Seattle waterfront. The elevated roadway was one of the city's primary north/south arteries until the new State Route 99 tunnel opened in February. In keeping with the city's long-term development plans, the unsightly viaduct is being systematically demolished to clear the way for a new-look waterfront. GeoEngineers is providing geotechnical support and construction monitoring for this project. As part of our services, Cora Johnson and our other engineers regularly walk several blocks from our Seattle office to observe the ongoing demolition and watch for potential impacts to the steep slope below Western Avenue. Teams from Kiewit are working their way northward up the viaduct, removing sections of deck, cutting the concrete into sections, and using a crane to lower the material down the slope for removal. Thanks to Cora and Patricia for letting us in on some of their daily views of the project!
Mikayla joined GeoEngineers in the summer of 2017, shortly after graduating. Since then, she's been busy! For this #FieldFriday, Mikayla shared a few photos of what her first year and a half with us looked like. “I find geotechnical engineering fascinating—the variability of projects, the problem solving, and I love how fulfilling it is to help make our world a little safer," Mikayla says. For this #FieldFriday, Arash Pirouzi shared some photos from his recent work on the Washington Convention Center Expansion in Seattle. In addition to regular geotechnical services, Arash recently had the chance to support a National Science Foundation (NSF) research project conducted by the The University of Texas at Austin and Northwestern University. The team is studying the behavior of Seattle clay, and they came to the Washington Convention Center to do it! Arash and our geotechs helped with the geophysical and geotechnical sampling for the research. Whenever possible, we look for opportunities to advance geotechnical practice through research projects like this one. It's part of GeoEngineers' commitment to personal and professional mastery. Thank you for sharing and contributing to your field, Arash!
When Roger Chang began his undergrad studies at the University of Washington Tacoma, he was thinking about entering the medical field. Not sure it was the career for him, Roger was inspired to switch to environmental science by UWT professors and mentors he respected. It paid off in ways he didn't expect, and today Roger has found a new way to care for his community--as an Earth Doctor. "I truly fell into this line of work, specifically environmental science, during my undergraduate study at UWT," Roger says. Today, Roger works for us at GeoEngineers as an environmental scientist, and instead of caring for people directly, he helps repair damage to the earth. As a key member of the Point Defiance Waterfront Team, Roger helped restore a historically contaminated site, turning it into a public park on the shore of Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, Washington. For #FieldFriday, Katy Atakturk shared a look at some of her recent transportation work. You can even see some of the season's first snow on the mountains in the background--stay warm out there Katy! #transportation #GeologistsRock
Yesterday the principals and associates in our Redmond office hosted a movie-themed celebration for our staff--and they really got into the cinematic spirit! They dressed up as their favorite characters, and gave out movie kits with popcorn, candy and a theater ticket. After goofing off at office everyone headed to Black Raven Brewery for drinks and even more fun. Thank you to all of our employees for their hard work, and thanks to our leadership for demonstrating #StaffAppreciation!
Every summer GeoEngineers works with a group of talented interns, giving them the chance to contribute to real projects as they continue to develop their professional skills in geotechnical engineering or environmental science. Throughout the summer we'll be showing you some snapshots from their work. Today, we're introducing you to Levi Potter. Levi is a graduate geotech student from Washington State University, and is already hard at work for us this summer. Levi says he's most looking forward to taking the geotechnical calculations and methods he's learned at WSU and applying them to real world design. Welcome to Geo, Levi, we're excited to follow your work this summer! Interested in how you can become a GeoEngineers intern? Find more information on our website, and start planning now for next year!
This week our employees were surprised to find some sweet Patagonia daypacks at their desks. They’re to remind us to be safe, healthy, mindful—and just to get outside this summer. Now get outside and have a safe holiday weekend everyone!
Look out Cody, above you! Oh, he's evidently piloting that thing. Turns out Cody Gibson is a licensed FAA commercial drone pilot, and he uses this UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for site assessment and recon. He flies over an area, and uses the on-board camera to create a dense point cloud and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of a site’s topography. In these photos he's doing flyovers for a job for the beautiful City of Everett! #FieldFriday #Drones #UAV
