Today we announced plans to create a new facility in Luxembourg that utilizes an innovative production process to meet the growing demand for premium tires. Our proprietary process uses flexible, highly automated modules, including 3D printing, to efficiently produce premium tires in small-batch quantities on-demand for replacement and original equipment customers. The technology used in the production process was developed and tested over the past five years at Goodyear’s innovation and development centers. The new facility, set to open in 2019, is in close proximity to Goodyear’s Luxembourg innovation center and a tire proving grounds.
We have teamed with Tesloop, a car service that uses Tesla electric vehicles, to test a smart tire with wireless sensors to improve overall tire management for its fleet. “We want to build the future, not just observe or read about it,” said Chris Helsel, Goodyear’s chief technology officer. “As the new mobility ecosystem continues to take shape, we are taking steps to match the pace of technical change in the transportation industry and develop tire innovations that meet the intelligence of the vehicles riding on them.”
As we continue to innovate and create emerging technology, Goodyear has opened a location in the Silicon Valley to connect with automakers, suppliers and mobility-related startups working on the next generations of vehicles and service models. The focus areas for this office are to optimize tires and service solutions for autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing fleets, use tire and vehicle data to plan for tire replacement and service, and connect with leaders in the automotive industry to accelerate innovation platforms. The Goodyear office is located at the Plug and Play Tech Center in Sunnyvale, CA, the world's largest global technology accelerator and venture fund. Goodyear is a founding member of Plug and Play’s mobility platform, launched in 2016.
We’ve been here for 119 years, but that doesn’t mean we’re not evolving! Check out our modern corporate headquarters in Akron, Ohio. This is just one of the many things you can look forward to when you become a Goodyear innovator.
Our employees are harvesting some unique "seeds" of innovation as we introduce a new tire technology with support from the United Soybean Board. The first commercial use of a new soybean oil-based rubber compound is helping us enhance tire performance in dry, wet and winter conditions. A team of our scientists and engineers created a tread compound, or formulation, using soybean oil, which is naturally derived, cost-effective, carbon-neutral and renewable. By employing soybean oil in tires, we found a new way to help keep the rubber compound pliable in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle's grip on the road surface.
Goodyear turns 119 today! On August 29, 1898, Frank A. Seiberling bought a strawboard factory in Akron, Ohio, and founded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
With Goodyear celebrating its 119th birthday this month, we wanted to share the story of Goodyear's Wingfoot logo. Did you know that it dates all the way back to August of 1900? Two years after he founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Frank Seiberling was inspired by a statue of the ancient Roman god Mercury in his home. This is a photo of the original Wingfoot logo.
On Wednesday, August 2, Goodyear interns and co-ops connected with Chairman, CEO and President Rich Kramer and other senior leaders at an intern social. We continue to be impressed and inspired by the talented workforce of the future!
Goodyear HQ associates got a surprise visit this week from a kid from Akron, who wanted to thank us for or efforts within the community. We share a sense of pride in our city, our work ethic, and our people.
Welcome to our Summer Internship Program interns and co-ops! Day one started with a rally tunnel to welcome and cheer them on. They were introduced to development, learning Goodyear’s products and a Goodyear trivia game. The fun is just beginning!
