Today, our Cares Team was privileged to take an agency tour of Covenant House and experience firsthand all of the good they do in our community. In 1980’s Fort Lauderdale, the lure of sun and sand drew a growing number of homeless and runaway youth who were migrating to the beach area. These disadvantaged teens fell into crime and drug abuse, leading to a poor future. At the request of two local judges, a group of concerned citizens raised money to turn the sleepy Sand Castle Motel into a safe space for these children. Each year, Covenant House reaches hundreds of kids in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando via street outreach, crisis shelters, education, transitional housing projects, and aftercare. So this year for Earth Day, SAFCO took a hands-on approach by offering our team members the chance to plant it forward. In addition to a goodie bag, we gave everyone a biodegradable starter pot, potting soil, and their choice of spice seeds such as oregano and parsley so they could plant it at home.
