I went from seasonal hire to salaried management within a mere 17 months with a little hard work, a lot of self-promotion, and a college degree.

Just prior to graduating with my Bachelor's Degree following my last semester of college, I had begun working for a Toys"R"Us store as a seasonal associate. I was assigned menial tasks such as sorting, packing, and keeping inventory of customers' lay-away purchases. I did what was asked of me, did it well, and was asked to stay on and transition from seasonal part-time to permanent part-time employment. I was quickly placed under the supervision of a full-time Shipping and Receiving Specialist and tasked with learning and performing her job on her off days and other time off. I worked diligently and began to suggest to the Human Resources Supervisor who had hired me that my potential was much greater than performing the duties I had been assigned, adding that I had just graduated college and was looking for greater responsibility, greater pay, and full time work. Within months, I was offered a promotion to work as the Human Resources Supervisor under the management trainee program at the Babies"R"Us down the street. I was mentored by the Human Resources Supervisor who had hired me just 5 months ago as a seasonal box pusher. I saw my weekly hours increase from 15 to 40 while my hourly wage increased from $7.25 to $13.50. I gained valuable human resource management skills and began learning basic business management skills from the salaried management as well. Before the company could offer me a salaried management position I would accept, as luck would have it, I was headhunted by an Executive Vice President of a local corporation that ran a chain of shoe stores. I used the skills and experience I had gained at Toys"R"Us to gain his endorsement, which practically guaranteed me a salaried management position at their flagship store. I was given an interview within days and offered the position. Thus the professional development of Toys"R"Us propelled me into salaried management very quickly. My seasonal hire at Toys took place during November 2013. My promotion to Human Resources and Management Trainee took place during March 2014 . My subsequent employment as a salaried manager at a large shoe outlet took place during March 2015. Thus I went from seasonal employment at minimum wage to salaried manager within a mere 17 months.
