What is the hiring process like at Gilead Sciences?

I really appreciated her clear communication and quick response time when I had questions. This made the process stress-free. Along with the help of the recruiting coordinator, she quickly scheduled my interviews that accommodated my availability. The grind of pharma is very real in this role, with insanely high expectations and poor access at many call points. The matrix team structure adds unnecessary complexity and a significant amount of repetitive, extra work for reps. The interview process is also extremely demanding and aggressive — more intensive than many executive-level roles — which feels excessive for a rep position. Diversity and inclusion is a major focus and clearly prioritized, sometimes to an overwhelming degree.

I was with the company for seven years so I was able to “wear many hats” as they say. Nice gym and wellness center.

No one cares about your growth. Bullying is encouraged amongst management and promotions are not merit based. I was a top performer in all of my years there and the one time I disagreed with my boss about a process and spoke up about process gaps, I was pushed out. Be warned. Most Managers are awful and are not good leaders. They pride themselves of their title but have no real managerial or people skills and most don't have and soft skills whatsoever.

The pay scale is reasonable for jobs I’ve seen posted.

The Raleigh team are some of the most unprofessional individuals I encountered within my job search. I had multiple offers for positions from multiple places, but was hoping to work at Gilead due to location and the specific job description and function. I went through about five or six rounds of interviews over an 2 month span of time and all went beautifully well. I then received a call before their week long July shut down and I had been chosen, went through details and was told I would receive my formal offer after their return to the office. A week after their return I followed up and was told it would be another week. The emailing and communication chase went on for a couple of weeks. Most times with me having to reach out multiple times before receiving a response to finally be told that the department I was being hired into was seeing a few changes and they could not fill the position at the time. Then was told there was a possibility the position could available within the next 30-90 days and they would proceed with an offer as I was the candidate they all wanted for the position. I also had a 2 offers from other organizations at the time and struggled with a decision to wait on Gilead’s lies. Thank god I didn’t tell my employer at the time I was offered a position. And thankfully I decided their unprofessional communication wasn’t worth turning down one of the other offers so I’m in my dream job in an organization that has great reviews and happy employees. My advice to their talent and hiring staff is - do not communication BS to candidates until things are ironed out and you actually are ready to hire. It was completely unprofessional to reach out to say I had gotten the job with a formal offer to follow in which in fact they hadn’t even had the position budgeted or approved for hire. So - candidates beware. And read employee reviews on working in the Raleigh office. You may just save yourself the annoyance and bad experience. I’ve heard terrible experiences from individuals I’ve met that have previously worked for the company.

Overall my experience was good, My boss sent me my project before I came in on my first day, HR has been super helpful when I ask questions, and all necessary information was given to me.

I would appreciate having information sooner. I am specifically referring to the email that got sent out about where to go/what we would do on the first day. I also think it would be helpful to get things like meeting notes/powerpoint slides soon after meetings, and it took a while with the meetings I had early on.

People are smart and generally kind.

It is impressive just how bad the systems are. Everyone likes to complain about systems, but I've never seen anything approaching this level of terrible anywhere else. Emails mysteriously don't arrive for emails. It takes sometimes 10+ tries every morning to get access to your email. Teams messages sometimes don't arrive for days. There was a bug for weeks where many people could only receive Teams messages on their phones and only send messages on their laptops. Any attempt to work with IT to fix if will test your patience. I once had an application mysteriously uninstall itself from my phone. When I opened a ticket when I kept getting error messages, I had several people in IT send me a PDF about how to install it to my laptop. When I pointed out it was for my phone they would just pass me off to someone else and the process would repeat. Then I would show them the error message and they'd pass me off again. I eventually just gave up. This is a fairly representative experience.

Great company to work with away from the main headquarters located in Foster City. Lots of learning opportunities and a good culture to make it so you enjoyed working with your colleagues.

Management reviews and process for promotions seem a bit skewed. It seemed to fall on how well your own management could "sell" you to the other team's management.
