      Pros

It USED to be a really great place to work

      Cons

In the past few years, it has become a huge catastrophe. It used to be a fun place to work when I was hired years ago with the ability to get raises and performance reviews from a manager who was there and knew you. but in the past few years not only have store managers been stripped of all rights concerning performance reviews and pay but also all firing power. Rases have been put to a committee that does the entire US and let me tell you there is a huge wage gap between certain states! I have been told by those high up in the company that no wage increases will be happening in my state for an indeterminate amount of time because they decided to increase wages over the middle states and that holding on for the time being and at low wages is the best I have, especially when I get a job offer for 25% more than what they are offering. I am always welcome back but with the way that compensation increase works is that it is a process goes through Store manager->District manager-> Regional Manager-> Wages Committee and is a two month process. How is that a retention plan? Additionally, I have seen and been directly involved in situations where HR will not fire any individual for time theft or harassment and they fail to uphold the employee handbook! Hours have been stolen from the company and from fellow associates own wallets! HR and the District manager's response? They told the manager that the culprit would not be fired and this is after solid proof was collected and other employee's signed and sworn statements! That same individual comes whenever he pleases and arrives to work inebriated and does drugs on his breaks! Did I fail to add he is a manager?! There have also been racist comments done to store managers and no follow through with that! This means that because Michaels cannot uphold their policies and procedures, ergo Michaels endorses harassment, racism, and theft-like behaviors. Is there any logic to refute that? Yes maybe a few HR individuals will take a stand and fix a few issues but you set a standard and precedence and that's is the environment at the Vancouver, WA Michaels! I have been upper management, I have personally seen this happen. I have tried to make it better. But I came to the realization that I cannot succeed and with a job offer that follows the job market I decided to leave. I still want to go back but I'm tired of trying to utilize my resources and seeing that my corporate gives me none.

      Pros

30% discount, decent coworkers, flexible hours.

      Cons

This company does not care for its staff. Every day with what is in the news and social media of how customers have been verbally and often times physically abusive to retail and service workers, this company does not protect its employees, while knowing the risky situations we are put in for simply following and enforcing the rules and company-mandated policies. They give in to customer demands without so much as a follow-up from – or helping hand for staff. The pay is overwhelmingly low compared to similar titles and responsibilities in other industries (all the while being customer facing), the lack of staff while also having higher expectations and pushing an increase of work in the wake of Party City and JoAnn Fabrics closures.

      Pros

      1) Depending on your coworkers & individual store management it can be a lot of fun. 2) Helping people create things and find what they need can be rewarding. 3} It gives you a chance to learn more about different crafts, and receive a 30% off employee discount off almost everything. 4) Framing is soothing and enjoyable with a mix of thoughtful challenges and potential times of flow. 5) Some of the artists and customers you meet are very inspiring. 6) they schedule out through a digital calendar 3 weeks out. This makes it pretty easy to plan time off in advance or try to find coverage if needed. 7) break room snacks are not uncommon, but are mostly junk foods & candy. 8) there are paid sick days for part timers - full time & management have other payed days off. * This is great if you are a people person, if you like art supplies, & if you have a passion to learn.

      Cons

      1) Higher up management above the store level have unrealistic expectations that put stress on lower management and employees through sheer volume of workload, constant changes in structure, & high yield expectations all while they cut work hours & lower pay. 2) The lack humanity in their policies and pressures to squeeze the most out of the least amount of workers present creates chaffing between their supposed values for high customer service & what the customers actually value; Honesty, help, and a little immediate gratification... NOT a snake oil of confusing sales or pressure for credit cards & extension protection plans. 3) Breaks are an uncommon luxury most days. The amount of work vs workers vs customers needing help is unbalanced at many times. 4) it's an extremely low paying job for such a high yield of work. Very little room for financial improvement with minimum wage to start and less than 2% raise annually. The constant change to pay policy makes it hard to keep up. 5) Rude customers ... As to be expected in most service jobs, but even more so when many customers can't find any help because there are only 2-3 employees in the entire store on average. 6) full timers who go back down to part time will have their hourly pay rate deducted. 7) so much waste. So much stuff just gets thrown away. It's ridiculous how much gets thrown out each week. 8) Trail by fire - your first few weeks they barely have any hours to schedule for training. Everyone is too busy to properly train, & it causes issues. *This is not a great fit if you can't stay standing all day, if you disagree with Michael's moral perspectives, or if you are financially needing a liveable wage.
