What are perks and other benefits like at Northwestern University?

Good insurance benefits and 401K matching.

Unless you're rising up to the top, the pay is mediocre but that's how all higher education is for staff. Most people are here for the benefits (insurance, tuition benefits and pension savings).

Can't think of any big cons

The benefits are great and the employee retirement has a great match -- up to 10 percent I believe

- Toxic management and faculty are not held accountable. If you have a bad director you might as well look to escape to another department because the faculty are untouchable. Your job to support faculty and research administration.

NU has lots of internal resources, good benefits, and for the most part functions like a well oiled machine. Once you're part of NU, and learn how things run, it's easier to find promotion opportunities.

Some units/offices/departments are prone to inefficiencies, because individuals are stubborn and like to keep things "as they've been". I find NU tends to prefer promoting from within, which can sometimes cause bad habits/patterns to linger.

Pays better than other universities in the area, but on par with similarly ranked institutions.

Still a grad student, aside from healthcare limited benefits and since faculty don't receive subsidies for childcare or health/dental, admin are slow to provide that for grad students.

Decent time off policies, options to remote work, okay pay range, ability to negotiate pay upon hire

Conservative presidential administration causing institution wide budget struggles, pay isn't incredibly competitive, some benefits days don't roll over into the next year, probation period is long

The team is competent and socially fun, although there are a lot of unspoken cultural norms that can be hard to pick up on. Lots of PTO available.

Organization is cutting benefits and there are few career growth opportunities, even in times that are not as challenging as the current time. I think people of color have a harder time advancing in their careers.
