What is the hiring process like at Thoughtworks?

Better than average service based companies. Great learning opportunities. Access to great infra for work including hardware and software. Most of the colleagues are great to work with, its management / HR quality that needs a fix. Interview process will be awesome, but that would not translate into great work culture in India. If you let go of the cons and do not stress due to that, then work life balance will be great, I could not do that while waiting for grade change.

India management is similar or a bit worse than average service based companies. Learning opportunities will not translate into career growth unless you put in more hours for org and community events outside your project work. Layoffs happened in last two years, now asking a person to get out has become normal from this year. Pay is a bit higher than average service based companies. LTA opportunities are hidden from covid times. For QA, career can become stagnant if you join after 6-8 years of experience. Projects can be bad, release might not happen easily and it might put you in PIP, recently happened to a colleague. If you cannot get into a project within a month, they might ask you to leave.

Colleagues are some of the best, the high standards of hiring and extensive interview process ensures really high quality, and very nice people.

In recent years there have been a lot of changes in the internal culture. There has been ongoing pay and promotion freezes, and at least three rounds of redundancies and lay-offs, with other smaller lay-offs in regions on specific skill sets. Management overall have been very poor to communicate, preferring instead to "restructure", again.

Well delivered and effective onboarding process along with professional and supportive culture, healthy feedback process. Having been at numerous toxic and unprofessional orgs, TW is refreshing and their mature culture seems unique to the company. Lots of opportunities to learn from staff with vast experience and industry leading knowledge. Able to work from home most of my time at the company which has been great for my health and also help me deliver more.

Career path has a fair deal of documentation but the career management process by peers seems broken. Staff want to know what exactly to do to get promotions and it is not clear how to answer and achieve progress. Although a great place to work and learn, pay and perks are poor.

Bad Communication Management keeps talking about our values, trying to make it seem like TW is different from any other service company. Maybe it was, once. But not anymore. There’s no "extraordinary impact" here. Most projects are nothing more than maintenance, and you’re not here to create an "extraordinary impact"—you’re here to keep things running. (Sounds exciting?) Values :) Transparency: There have been three rounds of layoffs. Before the last two, managers told people in meetings that they hadn’t heard anything about upcoming layoffs. (One week after that meeting, another round of layoffs happened.) People: I can definitely feel that the company cares about its employees. We felt it when we were lied to—twice—about postponed salary and promotion reviews. Seeing our "updated" salaries for the first time only when they were already in our bank accounts. (Sounds like a startup, right?) After two years with no raises, when they finally "unfroze" the process, even with a grade change, most of us got less than a 3% increase. If all of this sounds good to you, go ahead and join. Just don’t expect anything different from other service companies. TW is great at selling its culture—one that no longer exists.

Money is good. Ways of working are good.

The work experience depends entirely on the client you are working with. If you are lucky enough to work with a cool client, then it's amazing. But if you are not sure about the client, and decide to give it a try to see what happens, and later if you regret your decision, the leadership will not let you change projects (or roles) easily (like ThoughtWorks says during the recruiting process). And the worst part to me is that ThoughtWorks prefers hiring new folks, rather than promoting internal employees. I used to be part of the recruiting team, but I quit this role because I was being forced to run interviews to hire outsiders for a position that TW was denying to me. Since I joined TW, all my performance reviews have exceeded expectations. Besides that, I have received several feedbacks from the client itself and from different leaderships (ThoughtWorkers) that worked with me. I have all the evidences and feedbacks listed in the software used by TW to measure the employees' performance. And ThoughtWorks doesn't care about it. I am stuck at my current level (Mid-Level) despite performing (and being treated) as a Senior. In my last project, I played the Tech Lead role; I was chosen by the client for that position, yet TW did not promote me. I accepted the job at a Mid-Level salary because I was afraid of being fired for refusing the opportunity, as happened to some of my friends. If you decide to join ThoughtWorks, keep in mind that recognition is not as fair as they say in interviews.

Good overall payment, multiple clients to work, you can work with multiple technologies across different clients

The performance review is not the best, when you work as the only TW person in a project, the performance review can be tricky, and the process doesn't support you so well.
