What is paid time off like at WeWork?

      Not Worth the Pains

      Pros

Your coworkers are all going to be great and the members you work with day to day are for the most part also really good people. Benefits are also pretty nice, lots of PTO and holidays, decent pay, good parental leave.

      Cons

Middle management loves to abuse their power over you. No logic is ever applied to feedback and if you dare to try to have an actual conversation around the feedback they are giving you they will tell you off for it. I have never worked with such ineffective managers throughout my career and no one seems to care or do anything about it. Managers do not know the roles they claim to oversee and frequently during time off I have been found at fault for someone else's mistakes and bothered during said time off to fix it. They also love to play favorites. If others make a mistake and the managers like them it is not a big deal but if you do and you're not one of their favorites then it is going to be a major issue. And if something personal is going on it doesn't matter, the company comes first before your own life and your own problems no matter how big. There is also zero upward mobility unless you're willing to wait over 7 years for a position to magically open up and for the wind to blow in the right direction. They will tell you during the interview there is a lot of ability to have a real career here but that is categorically false. Everyone is only here until they can get to a better company and there is a revolving door of employees.

      Pros

      - Lots of change - Work with multiple cross functional partners - Exposure to lots of different start-ups - Lots of work with local communities - Unlimited espresso, kombucha, cold brew, and coffee on tap - Quarterly outings with your local team - Great work life balance

      Cons

      - Growth can be tough after Senior Lead - Once someone leaves a role at WeWork, they often do not backfill the position, meaning no room for growth for those who'd like to move up the ladder - Community employees don't get the flex schedule that HQ, Leasing, and Leadership employees get. Meaning we're in building all day, 5 days a week. Everyone else comes in 3-4 times a week, and typically aren't in all day. - Benefits have declined over the years. We now pay into our health coverage and there is no tiered system to PTO. A day-one-employee gets the same amount of PTO that an employee who has been with the company for years gets - Constant turnover in Corporate Leadership - Our company culture has died down since COVID. We used to meet 3-4 times a year as an LA county employee group. Now, we're lucky if we get to see our peers once a year, if that. - WeWork was a leader in Inclusion and Diversity, having an in-house team who solely worked on I&D work for employees. Nowadays, it's all volunteer based.

      Pros

      The work/life balance and PTO.

      Cons

It's a fun atmosphere but for the amount of work we do from operating an entire building, hosting events, other administrative tasks the role is severely underpaid. There is also not a whole lot of growing opportunities within this role. It almost feels like a dead end at times. They also moved their bonus structure to only being given at the end of the year which makes the payment significantly less (due to taxes). It seems they are valuing employees well-being less and using their bankruptcy (despite exiting) as an excuse to continue under paying their associates and leads that do so much. The company also keeps putting more and more responsibilities on the onsite and not compensating for such. I can feel the morale going down all across community teams.

      Pros

At a city level, WeWork is an incredible place to work. I've had multiple roles on various teams over five years and I've always had great respect for the people I work with. Work life balance is great and it's still a fun work environment, even through the publicity and profitability challenges of the last five years. I've never had a job I enjoy more in terms of my direct colleagues and the work I'm doing.

      Cons

However, in five years I've been laid off twice (and rehired in other roles) through various reorganizations. While I appreciate that my colleagues have swiftly recognized my value and swooped me back up it feels as though I could easily be placed in a new position instead of dealing with layoffs over and over again. At the same time, despite only being unemployed by WeWork for a total of 3 weeks HR still refuses to recognize my five year anniversary with the company. Despite multiple meetings between HR, my director and myself it's "not possible" to give me the official recognition for the time I've spent here given the gap of less than 1 month. This feels like such a simple fix, and a way that WeWork could deliver on one of its "values" of "Do The Right Thing." Over the last year WeWork has removed their 401k matching and stopped paying our health insurance premiums (with no change to salaries to offset). It feels like honoring my five year anniversary is a simple thing to do given all of these negative changes, but it goes to show that the corporate and on-the-ground experience aren't necessarily the same. (Note: my paid time off and potential severance packages are different based on my start date, so beyond simple recognition for my time my benefits are also affected)
