      I interviewed at 23andMe

      Interview

Initial phone interview with hiring manager. 23andMe isn't that nimble for being a company of only 500. They took exactly a week to get back to me to let me know I wasn't moving forward. I've had much larger companies with 10K+ employees get back to me within a day or two of an interview with the hiring manager. I was asked all behavioral questions which I really think is a mistake. The only business question asked of me was: "Why do you think digital health isn't as pervasive as some thought it might be?" I think this type of job would be served by asking business case questions that you see in management consulting/other corporate strategy interviews. The hiring manager only asked behavioral questions. I thought I answered them relatively well. I wasn't 100% confident with my chemistry with the hiring manager, but thought it was passable enough. The problem with these types of questions is they seem to be more contingent on your chemistry with the interviewers and are not at all indicators of whether you can do the job. Sometimes you hit it off with the interviewer, sometimes you don't. The call also dropped and it took a while to get back in touch with the hiring manager. Overall, I don't think the questions were all too structured or did a good job of even getting to my skill set and competence for the job. Typically, after speaking with the hiring manger, I'm able to progress to the next interview. But I guess the chemistry wasn't there. The only other thing I can think of is I don't have m&a experience. That wasn't mentioned as a requirement in the job description, and the hiring manager didn't ask me about my m&a experience. However, she did mention they do occasional deal work. A few days later I interviewed with the corporate strategy group of a retailer and my experience interviewing with those hiring managers couldn't have been any more different. They had very preset business questions which they seem to have given a great deal of thought beforehand. For example, “What should our company do in the North America market?” What do you think of direct to consumer versus going through a third party retailer?” "What are some digital health offerings our company might adopt?" When the recruiter contacted me initially, I asked if she could let me know of the salary, so I wouldn't be wasting time. But she refused. I still don't know if I ended up wasting my time. Most startups pay under market and I'm very much cognizant of that, so I wanted to make sure we were in alignment. I think they need to be more transparent about salary information. The majority of employers are. They would be well served in doing so. This is not top secret company information.
