      IOS Engineer II Interview

      Apr 23, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at American Express in Apr 2024

      Interview

The process took 7 weeks from the date of submitting my application to the final decision. round 1: a call from an HR rep round 2: a video call tech screening interview with a basic tech task. round 3: a technical challenge interview (video call). I solved the challenge by applying TDD under the required time exceeding the interviewers' expectations. A comment from one of the interviewers: "Impressive" round 4: a system design interview with two developers. No diagrams. Just a general conversation about my experience of refactoring a $1.5 billion unicorn app in the USA. A comment from one of the interviewers: "I like your approach to incremental refactoring..." among other positive ones. round 5: a culture fit interview with 2 managers. A comment from one of them: "I enjoyed our conversation." Result: After the first 4 rounds feedback was provided within 2 business days. After the final round, I had to chase the recruiter at AmEx twice within 10 days to receive feedback. Eventually, I got a call from an HR assistant who said that the team didn't feel that the engineering environment would fit my professional experience etc. Having passed all technical stages and considering the comments from the interviewers at each round, this was not what I was expecting from AmEx. The reason was rather generic than specific to me. After having invested a significant amount of time into this process from both sides, I was expecting a more professional and tailored response, specifically from a company like AmEx. This response demonstrated how they value their own time in this process rather than their attitude toward me as a candidate. At this stage, they could have spent 10 min more of their time right after the final round to write slightly more detailed feedback explaining the gaps they identified in my responses. By doing so they would have shown their professionalism as well as respect for me and their time spent in this process. The fact that I applied for this role doesn't mean that I was desperately looking for a job. My application was a sign of my respect for the company and an acknowledgement that working for AmEx fits my career goals. Having this in mind, it was reasonable to expect the same level of attitude from HR. They didn't even bother to send an email.
