      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Oct 2016

      Interview

Started with a writing sample, then a phone interview and an onsite interview after. I interviewed with 4 people onsite and the interview included 2 mock phone call scenarios which were pretty easy. Had a final phone interview about a week later with the Department head because he was sick on the day of the onsite. Everyone was really nice and welcoming and although the whole interview process took a while, I still had a very positive experience and was left with a great impression of the people and the company.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Block (Saint Louis, MO) in Aug 2016

      Interview

I was really excited about this interview because I like the company and what they stand for. I also met & went beyond all of the qualifications for the position - from what I gathered, the 1:1 interviewer did not seem interested in truly getting to know me or my qualifications. I had a great briefing/interview with two current employees prior to the manager. The questions felt canned, and it was as if the manager was looking for answers (and a way to answer) that they already had in mind, rather than being open to the way new people may think. I was ultimately turned down due to not fitting the culture, and I feel that asking me two questions is not a true representation of the way that I think or go about solving problems, which is what the interviewer was attempting to ascertain. It seems big of them to think they can possibly understand how I solve problems by asking me two canned, broad questions. I also felt that I was being unfairly pitted against a stigma because of my current position at a large corporate company, as that kept being mentioned by the interviewer. Rather than listening to what I find at fault with more corporate companies, the interviewer kept maintaining how Square isn't like that and if I could fit in there because of this. They also mentioned Square has a flat culture with no titles, and that you could speak to someone "really high up" and not even know they are really high up. I have no issues with their being leaders in companies, it just seemed contradictory that they mentioned there are no titles, yet in fact there are "people really high up".I get it - it's a start up vibe, and that's great, but I think they need to be more open with people they are interviewing - make sure you are getting to know the individual without having canned answers in mind, this will truly allow you to form a happy, positive, well rounded culture at Square. I really do like the company and what they do, but the "are you good enough to be here" mentality I was not that okay with. I truly felt I was stigmatized because of the way I look and my current job, and it caused the interviewer to form opinions about me dispute anything that I said.
