      Product Owner Interview

      Jul 3, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Amsterdam
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Jun 2017

      Interview

I applied in august 2016 and after the interview with HR & the technical interview on the phone I had been left to wait more than one month, then after receiving a positive answer put on hold until January 2017 which prolonged until mars when I was asked to have an extra technical interview on the phone which I passed. Then again on hold for 1 month until I had the last interview because the HR lady was either on vacation several times, either "very busy with all the emails & candidates" as she said. So in total 10 months since I applied! I think I called her and emailed her more than 50 times. She couldn't care less about me and understood how it was going to be in the company. (side note: I hope she'll get a raise cause she's very good at what she does!) The first f2f interview was interesting – you have to present a case study that you prepare at home, but they don't even give you all the information and then they ask to prioritize ideas & measure impact based on that data. How am I supposed to do that well, when the data is incomplete and the only contact you have is the HR lady who doesn't even answer to your questions and probably doesn't even understand her job? But at the end I received positive feedback about that part. Funny, I know! The second interview and in general all 3 f2f interviews are filled with super specific questions about so little things that they even forget the bigger picture. This role, I understood is more of an A/B tester that has to try hundreds of tests to get a small 0,005% conversion for some small part of the website page (they call this "data-driven"). Too much optimization and no innovation at all! Very uninteresting for such a role. They should look at their score on glassdoor and what their employees are saying about that. That is why I am finally happy they didn't take me, cause I don't want to be spending my days thinking about how to "think small" (this is what they said at an interview - "your ideas are too big"). They are so scared to change something more than just a comma ... I applied for this role because I truly believed I could have a real contribution to the growth of the business and to the improvement of the user experience, but I understood I would only be assigned to work on an incredibly small part of the website. The Product director told me there are several people working on different parts of the same page and that sometimes their attributions even overlap ! When I read the glassodoor reviews from employees complaining about all of that I thought it wasn't real, but hearing it directly from a director made me realize it's not my place there. Oh and this is my second application. The first time I had the same problems with another HR lady (I think this role is doomed at booking – they should invest in some serious training, not in hair-rolling techniques these girls seem to master) and she even forgot me in the interview room after the office tour !!! after 40 min of waiting she came by and realized I was still there, waiting for her. Super professional.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you had to make a decision without having all the data. How would you improve this page (results page on the mobile website)? Tell me about a time you had to influence the developers in order to accept a change.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Feb 2019

      Interview

I have applied online for position of product owner infrastructure through their website. After some days I have received email from recruiter saying that my profile has been shortlisted and they want to connect with me. I had initial discussion with HR and after a week I have asked for update upon which she said that my profile has been shortlisted. After that there was interview with 2 product owners for about 50 min. After this this round I got a call from HR saying that they want to move ahead and invite me to amsterdam for interview. After 2 days HR calls and says that, their higher management feels now that I don't have enough product experience(4 years in product + 2 years in development) and so they do not want to move ahead with me. These guys are very confused while arranging for an interview. They wasted my late night hours for 3 round of interview and until then my experience was all good. All of a sudden they feel its is less. Too much of miscommunication and lack of interest in taking candidate interviews. Also my second round was rescheduled at last moment by informing half hour ealier. They are not serious about candidates and interview and just waste time. Highly unprofessional and not recommended. By now if the actual recruiter reads this then she will surely understand, who has written the review.

      Application

I interviewed at Booking.com (New Delhi)

      Interview

Applied through the website and got a revert from the hr in 2 days. 1st screening by the technology recruiter was scheduled after 5 days, on a Tuesday. Got the call from hr 20 mins after the decided time. The questions were regarding the products I've handled, metrics, prioritisation, few examples where I performed ab tests and why I want to join Booking. Hr also discussed about the timelines of process, and the different rounds that'll happen. It was a pretty decent interview and I answered all the points well. The hr told that she'll be back latest by Friday regarding the next steps. I sent a mail on Friday evening about the next steps, as I wanted to utilise the weekend for the preparation for the next round. Got an auto-reply mail after an hour that they wouldn't continue with the process. No reasons stated for not continuing and no response provided as well. I'm still not sure what was the reason behind not continuing with the candidature.
