      Product Owner Interview

      Feb 16, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Amsterdam
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Jan 2018

      Interview

I applied via referral link, to a marketing position, but my application was cancelled and in a couple of days I was contacted by a technical recruiter who explained I would be more suitable for a Product Owner position. I had two phone interviews, one half-hour one with the recruiter, mainly about my past experience and how I ideate and make decisions. A week later I had a phone interview with 2 POs, and for that I was asked to prepare a case. Next day I was called by the recruiter and invited to a F2F interview some 10 days later and was asked to prepare another business case. The last interview in the office was actually several interviews, I was first met by a recruiter, the 1 hour with 2 POs on the case, next 1 hour with 2 other POs on decision making, management skills, after that another PO took me for lunch and talked about how things work at Booking.com. Overall very positive experience and a lot to learn. They want you to focus on data and this is the reason I did not get the offer, even though I was told that the interviewers liked all my cases and ideas, but that was not enough. Actually a bit disappointing, as I know I could learn things in future, given that other things are already good. But data drivenness and demonstrable experience with that are really important for this company from the very start. Anyway, I think I did my best and managed to demonstrate my strengths, and also I know my weaknesses and can work on them. Also it was good that I was getting quite detailed feedback at every stage. And I liked how professional the recruiters are. I used Glassdoor reviews to get a better understanding of what interviewers want to see in the cases, how they need you to approach change and think incrementally. It's good to suggest very small changes that you could implement and test quickly.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How you prioritize, examples of "conflicts"when developers did not want to do what you want, examples of driving change in a product while working with a cross functional team. Actually most questions are about how you use data, where you get it and how you apply it, why you use these data points. You have to really think it through carefully, and know how you'll be using data when experimenting with your suggested features.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Booking.com (Amsterdam) in Feb 2019

      Interview

I have applied online for position of product owner infrastructure through their website. After some days I have received email from recruiter saying that my profile has been shortlisted and they want to connect with me. I had initial discussion with HR and after a week I have asked for update upon which she said that my profile has been shortlisted. After that there was interview with 2 product owners for about 50 min. After this this round I got a call from HR saying that they want to move ahead and invite me to amsterdam for interview. After 2 days HR calls and says that, their higher management feels now that I don't have enough product experience(4 years in product + 2 years in development) and so they do not want to move ahead with me. These guys are very confused while arranging for an interview. They wasted my late night hours for 3 round of interview and until then my experience was all good. All of a sudden they feel its is less. Too much of miscommunication and lack of interest in taking candidate interviews. Also my second round was rescheduled at last moment by informing half hour ealier. They are not serious about candidates and interview and just waste time. Highly unprofessional and not recommended. By now if the actual recruiter reads this then she will surely understand, who has written the review.

      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I interviewed at Booking.com (New Delhi)

      Interview

Applied through the website and got a revert from the hr in 2 days. 1st screening by the technology recruiter was scheduled after 5 days, on a Tuesday. Got the call from hr 20 mins after the decided time. The questions were regarding the products I've handled, metrics, prioritisation, few examples where I performed ab tests and why I want to join Booking. Hr also discussed about the timelines of process, and the different rounds that'll happen. It was a pretty decent interview and I answered all the points well. The hr told that she'll be back latest by Friday regarding the next steps. I sent a mail on Friday evening about the next steps, as I wanted to utilise the weekend for the preparation for the next round. Got an auto-reply mail after an hour that they wouldn't continue with the process. No reasons stated for not continuing and no response provided as well. I'm still not sure what was the reason behind not continuing with the candidature.
