Interview
Overall process took about 3 months because of the small HR team, but a very pleasant process and communication was great along the way. Started off with a tech screen for 15 minutes for a data engineer position. Was told that I was a better fit for a Software Engineer role so I pivoted and did another 15 minute screening for this role 2 weeks later. A couple of weeks later, I had the opportunity to schedule a final round for 3 hours. 1 hour behavioral with a HR specialist, 1 hour behavioral with a group of current engineers and 1 hour for 2 coding interview questions. Within a couple of weeks, I had one more call with the COO - the last round. It lasted 45 minutes and was questions about my plans long-term within software development and the company. A couple of weeks I had gotten an offer.

Interview
The interview process was like a regular software engineering interview with various phone screens, and an on-site super-day. Everything was great till the technical interview: one of my two interviewers was really full of himself, and was busy chatting on his phone through most of the interview, even as I explained the answers to my technical questions (the technical questions are easy-mid difficulty data structure questions). I found the fact that he kept chatting on his phone really disrespectful of the time and effort I had put in preparing for them.
Note that since they don't have dedicated HR staff, the interview process will take over 1-2 months.

I agree that an interviewer who wasn't engaged did not reflect our values of respect for every current and prospective employee of the Lab. I will make sure that we address this issue and ensure that all our staff are engaged, focused, and provide deserved attention to our interviewees.
I appreciate your feedback on the length of the process. We utilize our department HR staff who deal with other priorities as well. However, we have worked with our HR staff to ensure we have an efficient process and reduce the time between application and final decision. Our goal is to do significantly better than 1-2 month turn-around time, but I am sure that varies with each position and number of candidates.
