I turned in an application in-person and waited about a week to hear back from the manager. He spoke to me on the phone for a few minutes about what my employment needs were and if I was still looking for a position somewhere, and then scheduled an interview for the following day. It was fairly straightforward.

Per retail; it won't fill you in on everything. Retail is sort of random like that. And there is no promise on schedule.
An Interview is more of an attitude and confidence assessment in retail. And to see if you can apply that experience.
