      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at CarMax (Dayton, OH)

      Interview

I applied online to CarMax's website, they called me the next day to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview took approximately 20 minutes. Ten minutes later I received a phone call to let me know that they wanted to schedule an onsite interview within the next week. I went into the interview early (which I recommend). It started with an online application interview then proceeded to an interview with a sales manager. That interview took 45 minutes. I was told to wait for my next interview. I waited a total of 30 minutes. My next interview was with two managers at the same time. They asked me a number of questions regarding my previous sales experience. The interview finished and lasted for 1 hour, then I was told that they wanted to do a mock sale on a car. I waited 15 minutes then was instructed to the mock sale. After this I waited another 15 minutes, and then met with the general manager. This particular interview took 30 minutes. It was the shortest interview. I arrived at 4:15pm and left at 8:15pm. I received a phone call the next morning, the district manager wanted to meet with me that same day. I went in that evening and had one more interview then after about 30 minutes was offered the position.

      Question 1

What is your most difficult sale you have acquired? How did you make the sale, and what methods did you use to persuade the seller to purchase the product.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at CarMax in Mar 2025

      Interview

The most ridiculous and unnecessarily tedious interview I have ever experienced. I was at the location for nearly two hours. Every question was "Tell me about a time you did X and how that resulted in Y". Disconnected and disingenuous. Similar to the interviewers. Not to mention how awful the job must be. $160 flat commission for all cars plus $100 if you sell MaxCare with some additional incentives as well. You receive a paycheck regardless, which sounds great, right? Nope. Whatever the difference is between your commission and hours worked is what will be taken out of your next paycheck. Example: Hours worked: $900, Commission: $750. If your next paycheck is commission based, you will receive $150 as they "subsidize" the pay from the previous check.
