I applied in-person. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Dillard's (Dallas, TX) in Oct 2012
Interview
Applied first on computer in the store office and was very quickly interviewed by a woman manager. She handed my a piece of crockery from a display and asked me to sell it to her. I asked for a second to look it over and saw i was labeled as dishwasher and microwave safe. I pointed out its nice decoration, then hit that the bonus was it was dishwasher and microwave safe. She said she liked me and wanted me to interview with the Men's manager soon but he was off that day. After waiting 3 weeks (!), I finally got to interview with him and he explained the sales position and responsibilities. He the passed me on to the hiring manager the next week. She asked me what I saw myself doing in 5 years. I said management. She immediately asked if I was prepared to move. I said yes as my son will be in college by then and I didnt want to do it until he finished high school. The next week I interviewed with the store manager, who had me sign some papers. I started trining the next week and was on the floor after two days of trining. All told, it took over 5 weeks to get through the interview process but I got the job finally.
Standard interview, quite short (20 minutes) for the first round. Asked about past experience, sales skills, expected pay, and my future goals at the company. Interviewers were very nice and welcoming, made the experience much less intimidating!
Not sure what to expect. When I spoke to the manager it felt very condescending and off putting. The interview was fine but they exaggerated the amount of commission associates can make and didn’t even give me a chance to agree to a job offer just assumed that I would take it. I don’t have very high hopes about how it will be working there. When I came in for my interview one associate didn’t even greet me like she did the last customer and the energy of the atmosphere just felt super dull and soulless. I need this job on my resume as a fashion business student for internships so I’ll push through but not at all optimistic about the work environment.
