      Senior DevOps Engineer Interview

      Dec 10, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Remote
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Enova (Remote) in Dec 2022

      Interview

They shipped a code assessment to complete before the interview less than 48hr before the interview began. They also sent over an NDA for me to sign before the interview, which I absolutely did not sign, and no one asked about this during the interviews. The interview itself was actual a block of interviews via Google Meet. It was 5 sessions of interviews with a single interviewer, back-to-back-to-back. The process lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes. This approach seems typical for them, and this strategy is probably by design. Between everything I ended up taking PTO with my current employer just to properly prepare/do their interview. I will also note the Systems Architect sent an email with a "Systems Design Problem" scenario outlining two different services that needed to communicate. He sent the email right at the beginning of his portion inside the 2h 45m block (interview #2 of 5). He seemed to be looking for a high level of on-the-spot sophistication when it comes to systems architectual design. I believe this is (as well as the other interview I mention below) the places where I fell short in their eyes. The other interview (2 of 5) was by far the worst. It was covering Kubernetes. The lead technical engineer of the team ran this interview. He also instantly did not seem to like me or either is just generally a deeply antisocial individual. This was to the point that at one moment during my time talking with him I actually considered ending the interview prematurely because he seemed so coolingly contemptuous of and wearingly annoyed by me. It literally seemed like I had offended him somehow. He kept asking vague, generalized questions you could tell he intended to have very specific answers given back to. It was odd. I am sure other people will be a better fit for this outfit and they will find themselves offered a stable, long-term employment opportunity (all the people who interviewed me had been there for at least 5 years). It just did not work for me, which is fine. I just wish they respected my time more.

      Question 1

Too many questions to cover here. But the general outline of their interview process was 5 interviews focusing on: Code Review Systems Design Behavioral/Culture Technical Problem Solving (Kubernetes) Wrap Up (shoot the breeze with the director)
