      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 27, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at GEICO in Aug 2023

      Interview

Eight weeks.... the Interview process took EIGHT weeks and after three rounds, was not moving forward. Second round I was told that I would be interviewing with an engineer and engineering manager. Imagine my surprise and anxiety when six people showed up for a committee interview. If I had been told this and told that I was under consideration for multiple roles (and what roles they were) I would have been better prepared for the other roles such as a Site Reliability Engineer. After 1.5 weeks (and my follow up emails ignored after 1 week) I was finally informed that I would be progressing to the next round. They failed to inform me or answer when I asked with what team(s) I would be speaking. Third round was more of the same. Basic software questions about thread safety, Big-O, Streams and Options and a few coding questions (practical ones, not leetcode). It then shifted into an SRE interview and what one would do in this situation or how would one create a playbook for disaster recovery. It then took two more weeks to inform me I wouldn't be moving forward. This was also after my follow ups with the recruiter went unanswered. Aside from this, the conversations with the engineers were great! A good amount of topics were discussed with some questions that made me dig deep 20 years ago to the underlying structures under the hood of data structures. I was surprised I had retained that information because never once had I have to put that to use.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Was asked about clean code, SOLID and my thoughts on them. Also similar about Agile / Scrum.

      Interview

It was a very lengthy process delaying weeks. Not that great experience. The female candidates who interview you are like police officers, keep your eyes straight, head straight and 1:1 bias interviews. Two leet code rounds, not really leet code as they are codality, next the design and architecture is based on a filed not related to insurance at all. The interviewer ask questions like we didn't use micro architecture at all right? Huh. Recruiter gets back to you after 4 weeks you didn't solve a complex problem for a senior engineer.

      Question 1

      Did we use microservices here?

      Interview

Had 3 leetcode interviews, but after that was supposed to be system design and behavioral. I’d say the process was smooth but they had terrible interviewers that didn’t communicate whatsoever during interviews.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Leetcode, mainly greedy and dynamic programming medium questions. Knapsack questions were common

      Interview

Pretty standard, coding plus system design and behavioral. There were two system design interviews and coding interview was somewhat challenging. I’d you have done these type sod interviews before you will do well
