      Software Development Engineer I Interview

      Jan 31, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Arlington, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at GM Financial (Arlington, TX) in Dec 2019

      Interview

Applied online after submitting my resume to a friend working within the company. Waited to hear back from a recruiter for months to setup a phone call. Once I finally heard back from a recruiter and setup a call, waited around for hours before reaching out after hearing nothing to only receive no apology 3 days later and another time to call. Recruiter did not call in the given timeframe and instead proceeded to dodge my emails and called me at random times throughout the day for the next week before finally agreeing to a set time. Once we got through the initial interview, was moved on to next stages to schedule a brief technical phone interview a week later. Was interviewed by 3 executives over 1 of their personal cells, dropped connection twice, could not hear most of their questions, and berated throughout the 30 minute conversation for not understanding "basic" concepts. Rather that look for my conceptual abilities they would cut me off and tell me to "to move on and add that to the list" of things to research for later interviews. Poor experience yet somehow got a next stage in -person technical interview. When trying to schedule a time however they were very inflexible to my current class and work schedule and completely disregarded the impending graduation and holiday season. After multiple attempts to reach a compromise that fit both our schedules I rejected the interview. Never heard anything else until 1 week before the holidays and received multiple messages from various employees, reaching out on all my social platforms, professional and otherwise, to "apologize" for scaring me away and to setup an interview that fit my schedule. Finally gave in an set an in-person interview for a holiday eve. Once showing up for the interview, the team seemed fairly open and friendly. However after a sad attempt to show their interest in my resume, the proceed to a very technical interview with multiple hand-written questions to assess my abilities. Though was expected, the manner in which they proceed throughout the interview was appalling. They continued to berate my abilities, cut off my questions, blatantly question my inability to meet "basic concepts", downtalk my educational curriculum, and compare my current standings to others they had interviewed prior, saying "I did not meet expectations" of students from other schools in other states. Overall very unprofessional and downright embarrassing attempt to hire new and diverse employees. Very uninviting and hypocritical group of men.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at GM Financial (Dallas, TX) in Jun 2023

      Interview

I recently had an extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience with GM Financial during their recruitment process. The initial interaction seemed promising when a recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn. We discussed various aspects of the role, including expected compensation, before the interview process was even initiated. I completed two rounds of interviews, which seemed to go well based on the feedback I received. After these interviews, the recruiter reached out to me to convey that they was planning to extend an offer. We once again discussed the compensation package, and I reiterated the figures I had initially mentioned before the interviews. The recruiter later contacted me to suggest that they couldn't meet the compensation that we had discussed previously. This was disappointing, as I had been clear about my expectations from the beginning. Had they been clear about this at the beginning I might have never agreed to go through the interview. The recruiter then proposed the possibility of a signing bonus as an alternative, to which I agreed. I was told that I would be contacted shortly. However, what followed was a complete lack of communication. I never received any follow-up. I emailed the recruiter twice to inquire about the status and express my continued interest, but I received no response whatsoever. I understand that sometimes circumstances change, and offers might not align with initial expectations. However, what truly bothered me was the disregard and lack of transparency displayed by the recruiter. It's incredibly disappointing to invest time and effort into an interview process, only to be met with silence. In conclusion, I strongly advise anyone considering a role at GM Financial to exercise caution when dealing with their recruiters. This level of unresponsiveness is unprofessional and reflects poorly on the company's commitment to potential candidates. A company's recruitment process often serves as a window into its organizational culture, and based on my encounter, I now have serious reservations.
