      Consulting Interview

      Feb 8, 2019

      Cambridge, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at IBM (Cambridge, MA) in Oct 2018

      Interview

I applied online and then got invited to an on site interview. There was a pre-interview event where they presented details of the program - this ended up lasting around 3 hours. I was one of the first groups that did this kind of on site interview (they used to go on campus and do final round interviews) so I have heard that this pre interview presentation has now been shortened to around 2 hours after some feedback from the interviewees. The actual interview ended up lasting the whole day (8am to 4:30pm). There were two 20 minute interviews with consulting partners. The data analytics consulting division was supposed to receive one behavioral and one technical whereas GBS was supposed to get two behavioral interviews (they explained this during the pre-interview event). However, many of the GBS people (including me) ended up getting one behavioral and one technical which threw us off since we weren't prepared. This was disorganization on their part and unfair since the GBS people who received two behavioral likely had better interviewing experiences. The main part of the interview was the group case study where you had to work in a preassigned team on a case study. You were given a packet with information and data then you decide whether the business should invest in this new technological idea based on the presented data. The case study was pretty difficult but I guess that's why they made it a group one as opposed to individual. There is data analysis (using Excel), financial calculations, etc. involved in helping to answer the questions. You then need to create a powerpoint presentation. Afterwards, you give a 15 minute presentation to a board of partners who fire questions at you. This was pretty intimidating. The rest of the interview was a mix of different company presentations like learning about diversity in the company, artificial intelligence work, panel discussion, etc. I feel like most of the presentations were not helpful and many people agreed that they would have rather left early instead of having to sit through all the presentations for a company that might not even hire them in the end. The day was also really disorganized since for the group case study, they did not give us our own laptops and never told us that we would need to bring our laptops to the group room. There were also issues getting onto the wifi. All of this wasted time since the group case study was timed. We never even got a proper lunch - we had to eat food while we were working on the case study. I heard that some groups didn't even eat lunch because they did not want to waste time. Like I said before, I was one of the first interview groups, so I have heard that it has gotten more organized since I interviewed there. Unfortunately for everyone who interviewed with me, the day was disorganized and unnecessarily long.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at IBM (São Paulo, São Paulo) in Oct 2025

      Interview
