      Recruiting Coordinator Interview

      Jan 7, 2014
      Anonymous employee
      San Mateo, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at IXL Learning (San Mateo, CA) in Nov 2013

      Interview

Found the job listing on LinkedIn. Knew a friend who had previously worked at the company about a year ago and asked for a referral. Was referred to the recruiting team, and got a call from a recruiting coordinator the next day. She gave me a basic overview of the role and asked a couple informal questions about my experience (it's a technical-recruiting role, and did I have any background in technical recruiting... yes.). It was right around the holidays but she said she wanted to get me in as soon as possible so we coordinated my availability and she emailed me to come in the next week. Logistics etc were pretty straightforward. I came onsite and met with the same recruiting coordinator and a product designer. They talked a lot about what makes IXL unique and what the company has been focusing on lately (adding more Language Arts content!). Also, since the company is planning to grow a lot in the upcoming year, there were a lot of questions and dialogue about the recruiting process and my experience creating a good candidate experience, sourcing candidates, and developing processes for the future. I then did a call with the Corporate Recruiter (who was out of the office at the time) who explained a lot of the expectations of the new role, how the recruiting team will be developing in the near future, and asked me some basic questions about my background and strengths. Then it was Thanksgiving week but they brought me in about a week after the holidays (I had originally scheduled to come in earlier but I had a conflict with my then-current job so I rescheduled with the recruiting coordinator, who was very quick at accommodating). I met with the corporate recruiter, a member of the HR team, the VP Operations, and the Engineering Manager who I would work with on recruiting. They all hit a variety of areas but talked a lot about IXL's growth, areas for improvement, and their perspectives of the recruiting process. They told me they'd let me know within a week if I'd gotten the job, and I received an offer 2 days later. I had a conversation with the corporate recruiter to go over some last thoughts and questions that I had, and I'd had another final interview scheduled with another company, but in the end I cancelled it to accept my offer from IXL. I'd previously had a job at a tech startup. While IXL is much bigger than the 10-person startup, it definitely still values the quick-moving developer culture that I was looking for, but with a diverse mix of employees who are young and looking to work with the newest technologies, and also some seasoned professionals who I felt like I could learn from in my career. Everyone I talked to during the interview process obviously really cares about what the company is doing, so in the end I think it was the best decision!

      Interview

Applied online, had a positive initial interview, was told I’d hear something in the coming days, and then I was completely ignored by the recruiting team. I completely understand moving in a different direction, but this was unprofessional.

      Interview

I applied online and got an email to schedule the initial phone screen a week later. The recruiter asked to push the call out to the following week and when I got the confirmation, it didn't say who I was confirmed to speak with. I thought that was a little bit weird given that the call was pushed out and confirmed with an unknown recruiter. On the day of the scheduled call, the recruiter was 10-15 minutes late and we ended up speaking for 45 minutes instead of the original 30. She said I was a great fit and would circle back with next steps within 2 days. Unfortunately, I received a generic rejection with no feedback whatsoever. That obviously left me really confused about the company as a whole given that it was different from what the recruiter said, but it was a chance that I took given that IXL recently had a round of layoffs from previous reviews. Definitely approach this company with caution if you're considering applying.

      Interview

The recruiter reached out to me and we set up a time to have a phone conversation. She kept saying how much I was a great candidate and would like to have me speak to the rest of the team. We finally had a phone interview and literally a few hours later she told me they were moving in another direction. She kept saying "the team" even though she was responsible for hiring. I hope this wasn't because I was a person of color, but the interview process was honestly a waste of time and I have never received feedback within the same day.
