      User Experience Designer Interview

      Interview

I applied months before I heard anything from a recruiter. The cycle consists of a phone screen, 'design challenge', present the design challenge. If they like what you did then you then come back in for another design presentation of your own work and a formal interview with the team. This seemed a bit overboard. I decided not to move forward when presented with the design challenge.

      Interview

The entire process for me took about a week. Zoom Interview > "take home" design exercise > design exercise presentation. The people I interviewed with were very nice and I had a great time talking with them. The take home design exercise definitely was not very UX... there was already a solution before navigating around the problem space. It seemed like they were expecting certain answers rather than trying to see if I actually knew the UX process. To be honest, I didn't understand why a design exercise was necessary when I have a portfolio showing my previous work (designs & UX practices).... I was also told during my early interview that there were no gaps in skills that were required for the job based on my resume and portfolio, so being given the design exercise made it seem like they didn't trust my work.

      Interview

Phone Screen > Homework assignment > In-person interview The in-person interview involved presenting my portfolio to a number of people, some in the room and some dialed-in remotely from another office. The sessions that followed were mostly 1 on 1, and involved reflecting on past experiences or coming up with design solutions to challenges.
