      Program Manager Interview

      Apr 1, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Insight in Mar 2022

      Interview

Contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn, who never provided a job description - citing it was a new position. The interviews went fine. Then, I was asked to provide free consultation work for how to build a program, I declined saying I could provide a high level over view of one slide, which I did and they loved. The interviews wrapped up fine and I got an offer and it blew up in negotiation. The first major red flag was the manager who the position would report to was leaving Insight. It went downhill from there. I had been asked about my compensation expectations early in the first call with the recruiter...but with no job description to work off, my number for compensation had jumped a bit when I saw what the job actually entailed - I increased my ask by $10k, and was willing to settle in the middle. Next red flag, I had to ask for benefits information, it was not provided to me when the offer was made. I also was dealing with the recruiter and hiring manager both calling me, sometimes hours apart, with different information about the offer. Once I got the benefits information I wasn't impressed. At that point, I ultimately had to disclose my pregnancy because I was not going to qualify for their parental leave and had to negotiate for that job protection - which they would not accommodate through their policy by a few weeks ( I understand policy is policy). Instead they offered lump sum payment up front. Things got super weird, illegal and unprofessional when the recruiter asked me "how long will you need for maternity leave?" Gee...I am not a medical expert to predict the future of a pregnancy! I was appalled she even asked. For a company that touts their new female CEO and many female leaders and managers, their company policies and recruiting practices do not reflect being inclusive or supportive of women and parents. The benefits for a technology organization are weak in my opinion; I was offered 3 weeks PTO, 5 sick days, 2 volunteer days, 10% bonus and low retirement matching - that has a 5 year vesting period. I really dodged a bullet when the recruiter and newly assigned manager started showing their true colors in the negotiation. The recruiter later apologized for her inappropriate question and for the manager who kept calling me about negotiating the offer. The whole thing left a very poor impression of the company and a few specific individuals.

      Question 1

Why are you interested in this role? What are your compensation expectations? What challenges have you faced in building a program like this before? How did you overcome them? How long will you need for maternity leave?
