I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual in Apr 2009
Interview
Very relaxed, I talked my way into the internship. They did not specifically tell me what I would be doing, and I later learned the hard way that it is a sales job. Great education on the products but it doesn't fit my passive personality.
Two interviews, one with a recruiter, who I am guessing will always be a woman (hmm wonder why?) and then with my college unit director. Basically he/she is your mentor for the internship. I made a 3 slide powerpoint for him describing my skills/assets for the company. He offered on the spot.

Was told about the program and how I would need to get certified to sell life insurance in order to participate in the program. The interviewer was laid back and relaxed. It was a group interview.
I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (San Jose, CA)

Three rounds with calls with the head of hiring and with the head of the department, all behavioral questions were asked at each round to get to know you and your network
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Skokie, IL) in Mar 2026
Interview
It’s a three round interview, but it really more about getting to know you as a person no technicals. The second and third interview was the recruiter speaking on the job overview.
