I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual in Jan 2010
Interview
First interview is a quick phone interview with HR followed by a group interview with HR. From there, an individual interview comes a week later with a financial rep. This interview consists of a presentation of yourself, your goals, and your market. Last round you are required to build a list of 100 contacts and also call//meet with six people and ask them a series of questions. After completing these steps, the process concludes by meeting with the Managing Director where questions about the project (calling six people and compiling a list of 100 names) are asked.
No technical questions, all behavioral particularly relating to ability to deal with failure.

Question 1
Name a time in your life that you failed and how you dealt with it.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.
I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Greenville, SC)
Interview
The process was smooth and straight forward. A lot of behavioral based questions, but relaxed and low stress. First phase is a phone screening followed by a teams or in person meeting.
