      Senior User Experience Designer Interview

      Jan 10, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at OfferUp (Seattle, WA) in Nov 2017

      Interview

First and foremost I feel it's important to be clear that I did not apply for a position with OfferUp, they recruited me while I was employed full-time. During the interview process, which consisted of four rounds with the recruiter and hiring manager, I ended up removing myself as a candidate after I was asked to perform a significant amount of free design work on the existing product. Not hypothetical use-cases, but actual current version analysis and user experience upgrades. All this after already providing a detailed critical analysis of the product with a wide variety of actionable items. Something I am very good at and get paid quite well for currently. I have 15+ year experience with a respectable portfolio and resume. I have worked with some of the top tech companies in Seattle and have extensive experience as design lead on a product that is out performing everything in the market. My work speaks for itself which I imagine is why they approached me in the first place. It seems to me, this company operates in a very gray area ethically. I would be very wary of interviewing for a creative role under the existing management structure.

Thank you for the feedback, and sorry to read that your experience at OfferUp didn't go well. As a team, we do appreciate the effort that goes into the preparation by all candidates. We are also are very grateful for, often humbled by, the creative energy and thoughtfulness that each person brings to a variety of topics discussed during that time. The excitement that emerges from those conversations are reminders of our own values. And your thoughts on the process are important to us as well. We put a lot of consideration into the engagement with the goal of elevating the quality of the interactions between the candidate and the teams as high as possible. That said, there's always room for improvement and our apologies if the integrity of the engagement came into question. It's not intended, and we'll make adjustments to better set expectations and offer more clarity when things like this arise.
