I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Progressive Insurance (Mayfield, OH) in Nov 2012

      Interview

The interviewing process at Progressive is probably the most intense round of interviews I have ever been through in my life. They are extremely thorough and selective but there are really no surprises. First, after submitting your application you will be asked to do an online assessment. It may take about an hour but it's not difficult. They're mostly scenario type questions and asking if you're more this way than that...it's just a way to see if you would fit in with their company culture and everything. After that, if your answers were deemed acceptable, then you will go through a phone interview with a recruiter. Mine was about an hour as well and the recruiter was extremely nice. They usually discuss the position and company and then they will ask you a few STAR questions (Situation, Task, Action and Result) and one piece of advice: be as detailed and specific as you can about each part of the question. Don't be vague as they will ask for more clarification. After my phone interview, the recruiter said I did very well and she would move my application forward. I then was contacted maybe a week or two later from a recruiter to set up the first round of interviews. My interviews for the first round were two one-hour sessions with two people in each session (the first one had an HR manager and one of the accountants, the other had an accountant and accounting manager). I was interviewing for four open slots in one department and one or two slots in another department so that may be the reason for so many people and so many sessions. You go into the Visitor's center at corporate and the guard will make you a badge and take your picture. The surroundings are very nice and made me feel relaxed. The interviewers then spend an hour asking you more STAR questions (situations you've dealt with at work, dealing with deadlines or stress, etc.) and they also want you to be specific as well. Both sessions were made up of STAR questions so be prepared for them. After my first round, I was contacted a few days later for my second round of interviews which were also in Mayfield. There were two one-hour sessions again with two people in each session. The first hour was again with two accountants asking you STAR questions and the second hour was with two people in upper management (I think the one was the Director of the department but I can't remember). The second one was very relaxed and they even said when I met them that it was mostly just to meet the candidates and talk to them so they could possibly provide input for the hiring. After the second round, I waited maybe two weeks to hear back. The recruiter was very nice and said they didn't have really any negative feedback to provide other than maybe having some better scenarios for the STAR questions but that it was extremely difficult to choose from the candidates as they had also gotten many internal candidates. That kind of bothered me a little as I interviewed for an entry level position so I felt like i was dragged through the hoops of the process. I didn't get the position but my friend did after first being turned down for a second interview and then being brought in for one after my second round. So I guess things were meant to be. Overall, there really are no surprises. There is plenty of information on Progressive's website about how they hire people and the STAR process. You can also look up plenty of common STAR questions online. The recruiters are very good at their job and I always felt that they made me aware of what was going on and what to expect. It was all very professional. The interview process overall was the most intensive one I had ever been through but after going through all of it, I feel very prepared for other interviews I have in the future.

      Interview

They ask questions using the STAR Interview method where candidates are asked to identify the Situation, Task, Action, and Result. They typically ask about 3 questions like this and then other more generic questions.

Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work. How did you resolve the problem, and what did you learn from your mistake?

      Interview

Very long process, with difficult questions. Multiple meetings with various levels of people. Targeted selection questions are hard to answer. Need to prepare for weeks in advance in order to succeed. Need to have many detailed examples. Interviews are multiple hours in one day for one round. Phone screen first, then online assessment, than in-person if you make it that far. Process lasts for a couple months. Recruiter is good about contacting you. Overall a good experience but without enough planning you will not be prepared and could be caught with nothing to say. Management pretty nice during process, allowing you to refer to notes, take your time and come back to questions. Recruiter contacted me with job offer and received an official job offer letter as well. Be sure to send your thank you emails to all your interviewers too, this will help.
