      Data Scientist Interview

      Jan 3, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Charlotte, NC
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Red Ventures (Charlotte, NC) in Nov 2016

      Interview

Initial phone screen with someone from HR where they ask you about your previous experience etc. Another call with someone from one of the many data science teams where he/she goes in to more detail about your previous work. Will ask about a project that you have worked on, what tools and methodologies you used. Will also ask what you would change/add to it. If that interview goes well, you will be asked to do an onsite interview. Before the interview you will be given a dataset and asked to do some predictive things with it as well as make a presentation for "management" presenting your findings. If possible, schedule the assessment a week or so before your actual interview so that you have time to carefully craft your presentation. You only have 4 hours to do the assessment, so make sure you use your time prudently. Be sure to knock your presentation out of the park, it is the first thing that you will present in the interview. For the onsite interview right outside of Charlotte, you are greeted by HR and given a tour of the campus (its awesome). Then you are taken to a room which essentially serves as a home base for the day. From there, you are run through a gamut of members of the data science teams, all of which were very friendly. They want you to succeed and explain why you did things the way you did. Part of those interviews is a code review of your assessment from earlier. They treat you to an on campus lunch break with some coworkers. Throughout all of the interviews, ASK THOUGHTFUL/INSIGHTFUL questions that show you're enthusiastic about the work you will be doing. You finish up the day with a chat with an upper manager from HR that asks a bit more behavioral questions. Do not make the mistake that I made and schedule your assessment for the day before the interview. I did not leave myself enough time to make a good presentation and fully explore the dataset. I ended up being sleep deprived from staying up the night before preparing my presentation, which certainly hurt my energy/enthusiasm levels.

      Interview

1st round is with the recruiter. Then they give a case study. Then, a technical round, based on the case. I got ghosted after I completed the case study, which I worked on for hours. rude.

      Interview

Phone screening with recruiter followed by a take home assignment. They said the take home should be 3-4 hours but realistically it takes a good 20. There were multiple parts involved and file structure requirements. I put a lot of effort into the assignment only to get completely ghosted. Not even a boilerplate rejection email. I am fine with being ghosted after a recruiter call but at least have the decency to answer a follow up email when a candidate spent their entire week on a take home.

Questions vary based on interviewer. It seems they just come up with some technical questions on the fly. IMO, if you know your stuff regarding traditional data science you can answer most questions.
