    Product Design Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Resonate.

    Interview

    A class act.

Started with a 1:1 phone call with the hiring manager, Jason. Right away I felt supported and part of the team - it was a very productive but normal call. I felt comfortable to ask tough questions along with an ease to discuss some of the less fortune parts of my history with additional comments of praise and support as I discussed myself. It's almost safe to say... this is how all interview calls should go.

Although the hiring manager used a consultant to find me, everything after that first phone call was very much personal and as if I submitted my resume or we were old colleagues.

The hiring manager and myself worked very little through the agency and kept things very human and personal. Jason did a good job communicating directly with me and reporting back to the agent vs the usual other-way around. Again, another human moment.

They brought me in for a second in-person interview at the Reston offices. Nice building, nice offices... business casual. A suite would have been too much (for those wondering)

I was able to meet with most of the product team. The VP through the Engineering team. They all came in separately and again... the team was personable, kind, polite and very engaged. I felt supported right away - even when the nervousness of an interview provided a brain-fart or two.

The interview questions were challenging and the team welcomed discussion, Looking back, taking advantage of the open dialogue but making sure not to ramble would have been best. It was easy to get a little too comfortable - FYI (which is a good thing)

The team was transparent about the product, challenges, wins, past, present and future from what I could tell. In short - this interview will be my template for how I interview future candidates. Laid back, honest and productive. It was refreshing.

I think I was scheduled for 1.5 hours and ended up taking 3.5 - most of that was probably my fault. This team is real cool - a class act.

    Interview Questions

    • The engineering problem walk through - I was trying to pull direction from him while he was trying to see how I break down problems. Very interesting and most importantly effective approach.   Answer Question

    Negotiation

Nothing unusual - if anything it was much more transparent than expected.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Resonate (Reston, VA) in August 2014.

    Interview

Setup in a room with a laptop and asked to quickly cone up with a working demo of a REST-based app in 45 minutes. After that had a group interview, followed by a couple of 1-on-1s. Overall fairly easy if you knew your stuff. Everyone was very friendly and seemed like a good, smart group of people.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Resonate (Reston, VA) in September 2013.

    Interview

There were 4 interviews , 2 phone interviews, and 2 face to face interviews. Resonate is a very innovative company, with some very smart people working for them.
The fist one was a phone interview with their HR/recruiter. The second one was a phone interview with the hiring manager. The third one was a face to face interview with the executive managers. In this interview, they were basically interested in understanding what kind of work I have done and how I have solved the problems. The last interview was with the engineers, and the engineers basically went into how I would solve a problem that they have faced. They have some unique problems that they have solved in innovative ways

I had no complaint about the overall interviewing process except that they were a bit unprofessional. First, someone modified my resume and put notes in there before sending it to the executive management. That would have been fine if the notes were clearly distinguishable from the resume. The problem was that the managers thought that the notes were part of my resume. So, I was getting comments like "You have incorrect grammar in your resume", and they even read out "Introduced XXX and YYY technologies. Not super innovative" "Why did you write not super innovative in your own resume?" Secondly, my employer found out that I was interviewing here 2 days after I went for the first face to face interview. I had to face an embarrassing situation at work

    Software Engineer Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Resonate (Reston, VA) in September 2011.

    Interview

There was one interview, with a written coding test. It only took 1 hour, with 2 random, computer science questions.

I was interviewed by 2 engineers and the VP of engineering, and was asked to whiteboard out solutions to the problems. Know your CS subjects well. As an employee/interviewer, we had a high rejection rate and were very selective of new candidates.
