      Strategic Sourcing Interview

      Sep 27, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Dublin, CA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3+ months. I interviewed at Ross Stores (Dublin, CA) in Sep 2023

      Interview

This was a recruiter-led process that took 13 weeks from the introductory message on LinkedIn to the final meeting where the offer was presented. There were seven interviews: three from the hiring line of business, 1 HR partner, and three from the business unit this position supports. All of the conversations were based on standard situational interview questions (“Tell me about a time when you…”) and the interviewers were professional and courteous. Midway through the process I was required to take an online assessment exam with questions requiring fast problem-solving as well as emotional IQ assessments that took around 3-4 hours to complete. The last step was a half-day in-person meeting at Dublin HQ where the offer was finally presented. I was then given a week to respond to the offer. Overall the communication was good and I would rate the experience positively except for one major flaw that occurred early on and wasted several months for both of us. At the end of the screening call when the recruiter shared the salary, I said no thanks as the top of their range was 10% less than what I make in my current job. Things should have ended right then and there, but the recruiter emailed me back saying the company had flexibility to make the job a more senior role. As I re-engaged, I shared my salary expectations, which I repeated three times during the interviews. At the end of the process I was offered the junior position with the low base salary that I had already told Ross was not acceptable. They did include a larger than expected sign-on bonus but it was not enough to make me whole from deferred compensation I would give up by leaving my current job. Up until a week before the offer was made, two different recruiters (one internal, one external) gave me every indication the offer would be in my desired range. I don’t know why they changed their minds at the last minute, and I will never know because as soon as I declined their offer and tried to negotiate, Ross cut off communication. This position has been open for several years, and if my recruiting experience is representative of how Ross treats candidates then I can understand why it has no been filled. Ross asked a lot from me as a candidate, sent mixed messages, and then discarded me at the end of the process with no explanation or feedback. This has been the most confusing and dehumanizing recruiting experience I have been part of in a 3-decade career.
