      Software Engineer Interview

      Aug 17, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Ottawa, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Shopify (Ottawa, ON)

      Interview

The interview process was terribly long and misleading. I first had a phone screening with a recruiter who put me back and forth into a number of similar roles. She drew this process out over many weeks. Next, I did a take home assignment. It was not terribly difficult but it was a canned test from a well known website tutorial. About a week or so after that, they brought me in for an in person interview with the team lead and an HR person. I had an excellent interview with the lead, we went overtime as we had a lot to discuss and the conversation flowed naturally. A few weeks later they brought me in for a full day interview with several pair programming sessions and a problem solving session. Two of the people who interviewed me were so junior that they would have been reporting to me in previous jobs. They barely knew how to interview. I got excellent feedback from them on the day of, and thought the day went very well. At the end of the day, I had a closing chat with someone from HR who went over all the company benefits and perks and we discussed salary expectations. It was a long and grueling day and not enjoyable at all. A few days later they called and said they would not be making an offer. There were no other candidates and the job is still open several months later. I find it hard to believe that they would put a candidate through all this and not make an offer. It is clear that the team lead had given me a green light and I'm not sure how they decided against me- the feedback provided was not consistent with how the actual day transpired. They literally wasted months of my time, energy and effort. I studied the company a lot in between all my interviews and devoted many, many hours of time to this opportunity. The chat with HR about salary etc. really is something that could have waited until after making a candidate an offer. It was so misleading and a very terrible experience overall.

Hi and thanks for the feedback - we really appreciate hearing from candidates. It’s true that the interview process at Shopify is intensive. We invest so much time and energy in our recruitment and interview process because we know that it’s the people - and the new ideas, energy and perspectives that they bring to the company - that makes Shopify an amazing place to work. We really value diversity of thought at Shopify, which is why we have candidates meet with a broad range of people, both technical and non-technical, junior and senior... we use this same principle in purposefully looking for candidates who will bring new perspectives and experiences to our teams. We’ve also found there are some key characteristics, like self-awareness and authenticity, that show up in people of all kinds of backgrounds. People who demonstrate these qualities tend to be really successful at Shopify, and as such we consciously look for these indicators of success in candidates as well. As a candidate, we recognize it can so disappointing to invest time in an interview process, and not receive an offer at the end. While it’s hard to let people down in this way, we know it would be far worse to bring someone into a position and environment were we didn’t think they would succeed. We really value the time candidates put into our interview process, and we’re always looking for ways to make the experience better for them. Feedback like this helps us do that, and we really appreciate it. Thanks for your review!

      Difficult interview

      Application

      Interview

The interview was intense and definitely exceeded my expectations. The technical rounds were particularly challenging, but I felt prepared. One of the system design questions was about creating a webhook delivery system with various complexities, and I was relieved because I had explored that exact topic on PracHub just days before. After tackling some coding problems, I faced some behavioral questions that tested my thought process. Overall, the experience was demanding, but I was thrilled to receive an offer, which I happily accepted.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Design a webhook delivery system that retries on failure with exponential backoff. Cover idempotency, ordering guarantees, dead-letter queues, and how you'd handle a downstream consumer that's been offline for hours.

Interview process went quickly. The recruiter was very responsive and nice, and made the whole experience 10 times better. The interviewers did not ask impossible questions and focused more on the thought process than the correct answer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The first 2 interviews were LeetCode-like questions. Not directly from leetcode, but if you know your data structures you'll be good. 3rd interview I had to prep a design document and share it and they asked questions about the decisions that were made and the rationale behind it.
