      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 24, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Slack (San Francisco, CA) in Jun 2021

      Interview

Sr. Software Engineer, Reliability, Release Engineering, Agents of Webapp, Final day of engineering interviews: "General Tech and Automation:" Supposed to discuss/review your submission of the technical challenge, and evaluate Qualifications listed in the job posting. Results vary. We discussed only one item listed in the posting’s Qualifications, and we did not review my technical challenge submission. "Teamwork and Collaboration:" - There are 5 prompts the interviewer is instructed to use. These are prompts, not scenario questions evaluated by double blind studies to prevent bias. The candidate is expected to provide narratives. Expect to be evaluated on whether your experiences have been generally positive and ended favorably; if the interviewer can relate to your experiences; and if you make the interviewer feel comfortable. The prompts fail to distinguish between the candidates actions or decisions, and the way the candidate has was treated by other people (which is highly biased). Results vary. I was asked additional questions about my past and was unsure what information the interviewer was asking (technical information? In light of the agenda, I answered the additional questions with information relating to teamwork and collaboration. This was the wrong approach.) "Troubleshooting and Debugging:" Asked to describe an incident or an outage I had experience with. Role playing debugging an incident. Candidate to ask specific questions, interviewer will respond with system information. "Hiring Manager (HM) Interview" - asked about my preferred style of recognition and appreciation. Asked about what I do when I am bored with a project at work? Asked what (I believe) had prevented me succeeding in previous roles. Before answering this, I spoke to the HM about empathy and how empathy is a set of skills which can be cultivated, specifically attuntment and resonance. Then I described the epidemic of prescription amphetamine abuse in the tech industry which causes hyper aggression, and how being the target of aggression has prevented me from succeeding in previous roles. HM did not show attunement: I can see that is really troubling you, or I can see how talking about this makes you sad and anxious. HM also did not actively listen and show resonance: I understand how being the target of aggression would be exhausting and demoralizing or I understand how being the target of aggression would be a roadblock to success if the organization did not support you. Their decision: I failed their communication test. (Not a good culture fit for the team). My decision: They failed my empathy test. (Lacking attunement and resonance skills).

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Slack (Seattle, WA) in Aug 2025

      Interview

The worst interview experience I ever had. The recruiter reached out to me for this position and after recruiter call, I had one Hiring manager call and I had to follow up couple of days later and was responded in a minute about next steps i.e. Take home Code Review. The take home assignment is a complete waste of your time, they allow you 24 hours and even if you followed all good code review practices, you have no idea about the interviewer is expecting. Then comes the most frustrating part, until this time the recruiter was very responsive and providing detailed answers for queries but after this round, no response even after I had followed up twice. I was ghosted without even a result. At least in normal interviews you can get a sense of whether interviewer was happy with you. Giving take home test and wasting 3-4 hours on their buggy code is useless.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you debug if a service starts delaying responses suddenly.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Slack in Aug 2025

      Interview

Long interview process. Recruiter screen, manager screen, code review take home (I spent 1.5 hours). Then a final loop with system design, coding (1.5 hours), and 2 behaviorals. The managers I talked to were great, but none of the engineers seemed engaged at all or like they wanted to be there. After the final loop (which I thought went well) I was ghosted by the recruiter, he didn't even respond after I followed up a couple times asking for status. It's unacceptable to not even get a generic rejection email considering all the time I put into this interview process. Complete waste of time.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Coding - download real codebase with a Slack-like chat app using Sqlite DB. Had a list of prompts to add a feature (private channels) System design - Design system to injest commands/keywords given in Slack messages, call 3rd party APIs based on them Behavioral - mostly standard questions, also asked some vague open ended technical questions like "how would you think about the API for user search suggestions in Slack"
