I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SolarWinds (Dallas, TX) in May 2021
Interview
- Initial call with recruiter - Meet with a hiring manager, discuss background - Take-home coding challenge with a follow-up code review - Follow-up code review - An EXTRA follow-up code review First call with recruiter was typical. Hiring manager interview was good, just personality fit and fairly easy as it's just an interview about your background both professionally and personally. Recruiter was communicative throughout over phone calls after each interview, however after the first call he started asking inappropriate questions - it felt very much like a fraternity - maybe this is the culture they're going for? Had a take home challenge to write a command line app using Java and create a Read-eval-print loop. A couple hours challenge. Interview to follow as a code review was fine, two senior engineers asked about the approach and all went well as they had no particular comments on improving. A few days later recruiter called as they wanted to review again. This time with just one senior engineer, same as the previous, comes back with a list of comments on nitpicks in the code "you could've done this, and this". Feedback is great, but at this point it was just nitpicking, kind of a slap in the face to have a follow-up just for this. This was a red-flag for the culture. After this call I received a rejection, dodged a bullet.
