I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack in Aug 2015
Interview
I emailed one of the recruiters to express my interest in a summer internship. She got back to me shortly to set up a phone call. On the phone, we just talked about what I was looking for in an internship, my experiences, and what the interview processes would look like at Thumbtack. She then emailed me a coding challenge, which was to implement a simple database. I submitted the code and heard back about a week later saying that I wouldn't be moving on with the processes.
For those interested, the recruiter informed me that after this coding challenge, there would be a video interview with an engineer, where I presume there would be a couple more programming and technical questions. Finally, there would be an on campus interview.
A coding challenge (3 parts), followed by a phone screen and video call interview that consists of solving and explaining my solution to a given coding question. The question was fair and the interviewer was patient and made the overall! They gave me wonderful feedback!

I applied online. I interviewed at Thumbtack (San Francisco, CA)
Interview
After applying online, a recruiter reached out to me within a month and got the process moving along. I made it to an onsite interview and my experience at the offices made me like Thumbtack even more. Unfortunately, no offer but everyone I encountered made the process enjoyable.

Question 1
Give a short lesson on any topic you want (asked before one of the technical questions).

Interview
They first sent me the standard coding challenge for a database on hackerrank. After about a week they replied and set me up with a phone screen. I passed that one and they set me up with another one a week later. After that they wanted to invite me to an onsite but unfortunately they informed me they can't sponsor visas for interns. Very unfortunate as I was having high hopes for the company; the whole process was very well done. The interview questions were both leetcode hards or modifications of leetcode hards.
