The interview was very simple, one interview asking simple behavioral questions about past employment history and relevant skills. After the interview, they called to provide an offer and the salary expectations. There wasnt a negotiation process.

UCLA application process, pass qualifying exam after course completion, interview with advisor, one academic quarter is generally a trial period to see how you fit in to the group and if you're demonstrating good performance. The goal of the entire process is to see if you are both capable and motivated to accomplish what the lab needs (as well as if you'll have the fortitude to see it through in the face of many failures).
