      I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at UPS (New Orleans, LA) in Jul 2011

      Interview

      I applied on upsjobs.com 3 times for an out-of-state position. I was contacted by HR and had a phone interview. Very basic and common questions. They explained that I wouldn't be offered a relocation package and it would have to be on my own dime. I expressed sinsere interest in the position still and they said they would be back in touch with me. After a few days I was called back and they said I would need to have an in person panal interview, but needed to pass a Sales Battery test. It wasn't easy, that's for sure, but I passed. They said that I could do it in the town I lived in Florida (opening was for TX), but it is in a different region and district, so the people who would interview me wouldn't be my management, or I could travel on my own dime to TX to interview. I decided to take the risk and purchased a plane ticket and scheduled the panel interview, which would be on a Friday. I arrived at a remote package center and thought I was lost. Luckily I had printed my email with the address and had GPS to confirm I was in the right spot. I interviewed with the Director of Sales, and two Area Sales Managers. Surprisingly, I didn't feel intimidated when meeting with them. The process was something new to me as they handed me a notepad and one of about 7 sheets of paper consisting of I believe 4 questions on each. They explained to me that I could feel free to think about my answer and scribble some notes before responding to the question. I was slightly perplexed and wondered if I should do as they said or if it were a trick or something. I decided to use the notepad and put some quick bullet points to clearly answer the questions. It turns out that they want you to use the notepad to illustrate organization and attention to detail. The questions were almost exclusively related to previous experiences and how I handled adversary etc. I think I did extremely well during this portion BECAUSE I was able to think out my answers rather than free-flow responses. After this portion of the interview was complete, they gave me a packet consisting of a scenario about a company and relevent information about the product etc. I was sent to a side office and allotted 15 minutes or so to read it over and plan out some strategy - but not knowing what they would ask or how I would need to use the information. After the time was up I had to role-play with the DOS and one of the ASM's and go through the scenario as if it were a sales call. I had very high anxiety walking into this portion because up to this point I did very well and if I blew this portion all the money I spent flying out here, taking vacation time from my current job etc. would all be wasted. The portion was about 25 minutes long. The total panel interview lasted an 1 1/2 hours or so. Once the interview was done I was told they would be in contact with me "soon". The following Wednesday I got an email from an automated ups email domain that made my stomach drop and me to feel faintish. "The position you applied for was filled. Please feel free to apply to more jobs on upsjobs.com" or something along those lines. I was devistated. I thought I killed the interview. I had made plans in my head for my new life. I finally built up the courage to email the DOS whom had given me his email address after the interview. I thanked him for his time and consideration for the position. He replied back about 2 hours later with, "I'm not sure why that sent out, but hold tight and don't panic, I will be back in touch". Two days later I got an email asking if I could be on a call that afternoon, which I said sure. I was called by him and a different ASM and they offered me the position and asked when I could start.

      To be honest, the Sales Battery test they gave me before the panel interview was the hardest. HR let me know that around 50% of the people who take it fail. It's the type of test were 3 of the 4 answers are right, but one is more right.
