      Tutor Interview

      Oct 19, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at VIPKid (New York, NY)

      Interview

I do not want to sound disgruntled. I am actually relieved I was turned down by VIPkid. Here's the thing-from other reviews I have read VIPkid (once employed) can suddenly send you an e mail saying that your account has been deactivated-in other words-you are fired-they can do it with a click of a button. I had an initial live interview in which I could not understand the woman's accent and the call center was very loud. I was asked to try again so I sent in a demo tape. I quickly received an e mail saying I was being offered so much an hour and a contract is attached. They then ask you to do a mock lesson. If you are a certified teacher which I am with 13 years in public schools (have also been a 1st grade reading tutor) be wary. This will go against anything you have ever been taught. It is so scripted and the lessons are very fragmented-they do not flow. If you plan to do a mock lesson be prepared to be teaching an adult who sits stone faced and says practically nothing-sits motionless and mumbles very few words. Don't talk much-just use hand signals. Just smile and smile a lot. My first interview went ok-did not get much feedback. Just had my second mock class and this is where it all fell apart. The woman who was pretending to be the student kept losing her sound and image so she'd just drop out. I had trouble getting the lesson to flow. You can not use incidental language which is very hard. That is why I say don't speak much. Just sign. I'll be honest-if this had been with a child I would have been fine. So today I get a point blank e mail saying I did not pass my account has been deactivated. I was kicked off the island. Better now then having invested too much money or time. I'd rather be kicked out now then after a lesson with a child-big ouchie! Good luck!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Pretty much asked nothing-just "are you ready" They don't ask anything about your experience as a teacher.

We are sorry to hear that your second Mock Class lacked an adequate level of background information, and an inconsistency in feedback. VIPKID is always looking to provide supplemental training for our interviewers – in order to avoid any negative experiences. We are working hard to streamline this process, and would definitely like to hear back from you directly. Below is the link to a survey that can help us collect more information about your Mock Class. • https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeS2GhDwhPN1GzscH_ciaeyWVNIayAd-e98UjyylhOViOlyFw/viewform By providing us with additional feedback, we will be able to find ways to make more improvements. We appreciate your time and understanding.
