I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Varsity Tutors (Washington, DC) in May 2015
Interview
There was a brief phone interview followed by a longer interview over their video/lesson platform; both interviews included brief questions/tutoring demonstrations related to the subjects I was interested in tutoring. Between interviews they asked me to upload scores for the tests I said I could tutor for and take subject tests on their website. I received an email two days after the video interview saying that they would not have enough students for me in my area. I guess it was a responsible move if they have had too many tutor applications, though they could have done that calculation earlier in the process. The email said I had been accepted to create a profile with University Tutor instead, so I will see if there is any demand there.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
For one subject I had to talk the interviewer-as-student through a problem. For another subject I had 3 minutes to write an example tutoring lesson in their document editor. Nothing too rigorous if you know the subjects.
There was not one only exams that had to be passed to teach certain subjects. It is an AI test so it is set up like an interview. I really liked this process.

Question 1
If I fully understood the material I was teaching.
You are sent a link to an online video interview. They ask you about previous tutoring experience and the last question was asking you to do a mock-tutoring session. It's very awkward because you have to make up what you want to teach on the spot, but you get unlimited time to think of responses.
I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Varsity Tutors (University Park, MD) in Aug 2025
Interview
AI Interview, very easy. Asked very basic question's regarding experience, motivation, etc. I’m a freshman student in UMD and so I haven’t been to many job interviews, but this was genuinely easy.
