      Junior QA Automation Engineer Interview

      Mar 8, 2023

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Veeam Software (Prague) in Feb 2023

      Interview

I applied online in January 2023 for a position in the Prague office of Veeam and received a final answer in March. The process was long and required me to invest a lot of time, but I certainly learned a lot. The process went as follows: - 1. I was sent an email assignment with 4 logical questions to answer in 2-3 days, questions such as; what safety tests would I perform on an electric scooter before releasing it to market, what questions I would ask experts before building houses in Antarctica, estimating the number of mechanical scales in the Czech Republic. These questions were honestly more fun than it was stressful. - 2. Next (although 2 weeks later) I was invited to a two-part online call where the first part was a 40 min online test with similar questions as in step 1 and also what tests I would perform on a bathroom scale before my company would release it. The second part was a 1-2-1 chat with a QA Team leader, he asked me for top-level explanations about topics related to networking such IP addresses, DNS, DHCP, NTFS, routers, converting binary numbers to hex, etc. and finally further questions about the bathroom scale from the first 40 min test. Note: in my case there were other candidates on the initial call which was a bit of a surprise for me, you won't have to speak with, or in front of them, but they will see your name and know you're in this process if that's a concern for you. - 3. I was then given a task to complete within 7-10 days, I was asked to learn more in-depth about IPs, subnets & subnet masks, NTFS vs FAT32. While it wasn't required or checked, to help prepare I was also asked to download VMware and install a few virtual machines including a server with DNS and DHCP , then add some Windows 10 OS virtual machines to the server. I set all this up and in addition I also created a DNS server with only secondary zones of the main server. I also added some Linux OS machines in addition to Windows. After this I also registered to Veeam university and completed some certificates, I also downloaded the Veeam Backup and Replication Community Edition and used it to apply some backup jobs to my network mentioned above. - 4. I had a 17 min control call with the same QA team leader who spoke with me in point 2. He asked more questions as set out in point 3. Unfortunately I fell short and I was not invited to the final round after this call. - Overall everyone I spoke with was very nice and I had a chance to show my work, however I was left wondering how these tasks related to the originally described position, I had to ask in the final call if I wasn't mistakenly put into a process for a different position.
