I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Verizon (Allentown, PA) in Nov 2017
Interview
Met recruiters at an online job fair for US military veterans. Recruiter (initials: N. R.....lives in Pennsylvania) had no problem responding to emails before the application, but then ghosted me after applying - obviously he basically only cared about his application KPI and not actually getting people through to the end of his pipeline. This was a near entry-level position, and I fit the vacancy announcement almost perfectly (US military veteran w/ requisite university degree).
As a former hiring manager myself that has had to work with recruiters before, I found it completely unprofessional. This type of work by recruiters in my previous company would not have been tolerated. Clearly this recruiter lacked the ability to accept responsibility for performance (and, if he can't get hiring managers on board, likely has issues working well in teams).

Phone screening then following with interviews back to back. Then got a call from HR received an offer overall the process is quick and interviewers are friendly good team and culture.
straight forward, one day of in person interviews. No difficult questions. Be prepared to ask about Verizon and the day to day requirements of the job. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the organization
All formal interviews, both internal and external, are STAR based questions (discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result). Not sure about how contractors are interviewed. It is only difficult if you aren't well versed in how to answer STAR questions.
