      Machine Learning Engineer Interview

      Nov 8, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Workday

      Interview

I have been to quite a few interviews that would qualify as "weird" and "raising an eyebrow", but this one was definitely in a league of its own. Having very relevant background, and having read several encouraging reviews on this site and elsewhere, I expected an interesting, or at least a meaningful conversation. Instead, the gentleman on the phone proceeded to sell Workday like their office rent was due tomorrow. Workday has this and that innovative product, and uses this and that cutting edge Machine Learning technique, and there is no IT brand Workday doesn't have a genuine interest in or doesn't have a team of specially trained sentients working on it as we speak. He would not pause even for a split second to let me introduce myself let alone contribute to the conversation, nor did he ask a single question about my background. He finished his sales pitch (which could be worthy of Robin Williams) and pretty much wrapped up the conversation immediately afterwards, making me wonder if he thought this was supposed to be a sales call. But this apparently was not the case because in a few days I received an email stating that while my background is impressive, the company has decided to go with another candidate.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Workday in Apr 2026

      Interview

The interview process through Workday spanned approximately one month and consisted of multiple stages, requiring a significant time investment, including preparation for each round. At the final stage, I was asked to move the interview earlier to accommodate the company’s scheduling needs, which created a sense of urgency. The final interview with the hiring manager, however, fell noticeably short of expected professionalism. It lasted approximately 15 minutes, felt rushed, and lacked engagement. The interviewer appeared distracted, disengaged, and was eating his lunch during the conversation, which made it difficult to have a meaningful and respectful discussion. Given the length of the process and the effort expected from candidates, a more consistent, focused, and professional experience, especially at the final stage, would significantly improve the overall process.

      1. Screening round (resume and ML basics) 2. ML coding round 3. Software system knowledge round 4. Data manipulation round (pandas) 5. ML theory round (discussing theory and ML use-cases) 6. Hiring manager round 7. They decided to have another hiring manager round, since the HM was out of office during the previous round and someone else filled in for him. 2 months of wait time after interview then, rejection.
