Mission For too long, the insurance industry has had a ‘repair and replace’ approach to risk. Our goal is to give every company the tools to transition from ‘repair and replace’ to ‘predict and prevent.’ This is a proactive approach to property risk, which uses predictive analytics to detect and mitigate losses before they occur. The result is a win for all parties involved. Insurers avoid paying out large claims, and customers can sleep easier at night knowing they are protected.
Description The Betterview Platform is the best way for P&C insurance companies to identify and manage real property risk. Combining innovative technologies, including high-quality geospatial imagery and computer vision insights, the Platform gives underwriters a comprehensive, actionable view of every property in their book – spotlighting risk drivers from insufficient defensible space to detailed analysis of roof damage – and then transforms that data into immediate, concrete policy actions. Reducing avoidable losses, boosting efficiency, and facilitating a better customer experience.
Growing up in the property inspections business, Dave Tobias knew that P&C insurers struggled to get a clear, reliable view of roof condition. He also knew that obtaining a better view of roofs could help insurers determine overall risk. Dave teamed up with David Lyman, whose experience in enterprise software startups launched the two on their journey to help insurers identify and manage property risk.
Betterview started in 2014 by capturing roof imagery using painter’s poles, and then with drones, before finally moving to more scalable aerial imagery exclusively. (Read our blog to learn about the benefits of aerial imagery.) From the beginning, Tobias and Lyman knew that imagery was only part of their solution. Underwriters needed insights on real property risk beyond what raw imagery could show. Thus, an initial focus on imagery evolved into an end-to-end policy solution: The Betterview Property Intelligence & Risk Management Platform.
As the company matured, the Betterview Platform expanded in scope and functionality. A growing team of data scientists and machine learning engineers built a sophisticated set of computer vision detections, capable of spotlighting individual maladies on every property, from roof damage to vegetation overgrowth and dozens more. The company also established partnerships with trusted third-party data providers to expand our platform. Now users can easily augment Betterview insights with wildfire analytics from RedZone, property valuations from e2Value, or dozens of other industry-trusted data sources available in our PartnerHub [ Link to PartnerHub page in Platform].
Today, Betterview continues to grow and flourish. New features are regularly added to the Platform, such as our Catastrophic Response System (CAT-RS) and Hurricane/Wildfire Risk Insights. But although the Platform is always changing, its core functionality remains. It is still the most powerful and reliable way to analyze, score, manage, and monitor real property risk.
