Great impressions
Jul 28, 2016 - Operations Engineer in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are a lot of exceptional people at Apigee. There are also people who aren't quite there yet, but most of them are young and by being here, they'll definitely be exceptional in their field in the future. If you're an Engineer, you'll be tasked with challenging problems. The problems, in my experience, have been fun and exciting. I remember during my interview, my interviewer said something that really stuck with me and enticed me into joining and that was "We're trying to solve the problems of the future". For context during the interview, "problems" referred to technical problems, but in many ways Apigee as a whole is trying to solve other problems in the world. If there's anything that you need in order to do your job better, you can definitely send a casual message to either the front desk (people ops) or IT. There's also a vending machine with common accessories. Parking is a breeze if you manage to get access to the building's parking lot. Otherwise, it's a small walk from the other parking lot down the street. Keto/Low-carbers will not have many issues with the catered lunch selections. There's usually always options. I, however, sometimes cheat when Sushi day comes along. Mostly everyone's calendar is public so you can spy Table tennis table and billiards in the gym
Cons
You might gain weight here if you aren't strongly willed when 11:30am comes around, but even the healthy options are tasty

Awesome company with lots of opportunity for growth
Aug 4, 2016 - Software Developer in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Really interesting technical problems to solve on all fronts (customer-facing, internal tools, infra, open-source) and opporutnity to work with brand new/up and coming technology - Dedication to open source contribution and presence in communities - They take care of their employees, great benefits, pay, perks and appreciation from coaches - Coach > Manager, your coach is the person responsible for evaluating bonuses and doing all the managerial things, but they also take their job as a mentor seriously. I've had great coach relationships and they've been the highlight of my time here. - Lots of opportunity to step up and take ownership of projects - Obvious that everyone believes in and is passionate about the company and is unified behind a central vision. - Flat hierarchy means you can talk to anyone, and it is in fact welcome/encouraged
Cons
- can feel slightly chaotic at times due to flat hierarchy, when attempting to determine who the PoC is for something - hint of poor work/life balance, sometimes messages will come in on weekends or late hours of a weekday, sometimes asked to make really tough deadlines (however upon hitting them, reward is not far behind)

Thank you for your thorough review. I've learned from reading your thoughts. Perhaps one of the most gratifying things I've read here is when you said "I've had great coach relationships and they've been the highlight of my time here" Totally appreciate the work/life balance comment. We are surrounded by dedicated, committed people who integrate work and life and often find the work part to subsume much of the life part. I suspect that some of this is simply the way we are wired. That said, am always open to ideas re. how we might improve in this area. Last thought: I'm reading this at the end of a week. You've set me up for a nice weekend. Thank YOU!

High Ceiling for Flexible, Innovative, Rockstars
Nov 13, 2014 - Anonymous Employee in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Apigee is a place for rockstars to make their own. It is a company where people work on the projects they want to work on, and contribute in the manner that best fits them. It's a results driven company that sits in an incredible growth space for their customers. There is a real effort to eliminate silos, titles, and hierarchy.
Cons
Your colleagues are human, and you are responsible for yourself. That combination means that you might not have shelter from someone who thinks your ideas are bad. It means that you are responsible for ensuring that you make an impact on the company (you can't depend on a manager to create your to-do list). The first few months are hard for just about everyone as they figure out the various nuances of operating in a company as flat as Apigee, and for some people Apigee is not a good fit.

The People Here are Awesome!
Mar 1, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
One of my favorite parts of working here is the people. If you need help or have a question on something, there is always someone around who is ready and able to assist you. There is no need to go from your manager to another, just to speak with someone in a different group. Conversations in the lunch room are great because you can get someone from Engineering, Marketing, HR, and Sales sitting together chatting about different aspects of the business, or something not work related that you all happen to have in common. The catered lunch everyday is great and allows people from different parts of the organization to get together in one place. It's an awesome way to see the culture in action and meet someone you haven't talked to before.
Cons
Sometimes the open floor plan can be a bit distracting with the "drive bys" of people, but that's why we have so many great conference rooms and an amazing WFH policy.

I can't agree more. The people here are awesome!

Pros
Great environment for someone to learn and grow. Trusted, Empowered to make decisions. Great people and technology. Freedom in doing what you need to do to get the job done - no bureaucracy or politics. Good environment of cross-functional teamwork. Casual, flexible, open work environment.
Cons
You have to be comfortable with pushing the envelope constantly - and be comfortable working in an environment where your value is derived from the work and impact you have on a daily basis. You can not rest on the laurels of your past, your seniority / "years of experience" or job position/ title. This isn't really a con - but this isn't needed in every other place where people can be successful for other reasons. So something to seriously consider, while considering joining Apigee.

Thank you for writing such a compelling and thoughtful review. I treat this review as so valuable in light of the fact that it is written by someone with 5+ years at Apigee. I've read and re-read the review to assure that I absorbed every ounce of insight from it that I can. When you write that one must be "comfortable with pushing the envelope constantly" - I could not agree with you more. Our customers need us to create value for them in a manner that keeps pace with their ever changing needs. If we don't push the envelope for them then they will fall behind. I've never before worked in a place where I was more confident in our unwillingness to let our customers fail than Apigee. I suspect that you have been instrumental in achieving this reality. For that, thank you!

Pros
Apigee is one of the leaders in API management space as a result there is a constant push to raise the bar higher. This often means that Engineering has to come up with new ways to do things such as best practices to design API, coming up with technology stack that works equally well in cloud and in private data center. We often push limits of existing technology stack such as Cassandra, Zookeeper, node.js, Java and often contribute back to community. So if you want to be part of company that is helping define what digital business of future looks like and work in an environment where engineering innovation is encouraged, you will find yourself at home and at ease.
Cons
We move fast so sometimes work and life balance will get skewed towards work. But this does not happen all the time. :-)

The Culture is Amazing
Aug 4, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I would say the biggest asset about this place is that everyone cares. We care about our customers and the problems we're solving for them, we care about the work we produce, we care about the type of environment we are creating and we care about the people we work with everyday. This is the mentality almost everyone who walks through these doors has, and it really makes the place what it is.
Cons
Because of the type of culture and environment we have, it gets really difficult when people leave, and it can be discouraging at times.
Continue readingApigee Response
Thank you for such a thoughtful review. I agree 100% with the biggest asset = everyone cares and I too get sad when people leave. But not discouraged as we have to acknowledge that in the hyper-competitive places like Silicon Valley and Bangalore there will be attrition. Fact of doing business. We will continue to be transparent, as you recommend. Really appreciate your thinking.

Geeks would love it here!
Aug 25, 2014 - Engineering in San Jose, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- You will get to work with some of the smartest people in the world. - Being a market leader, the Engineering team is always coming up with the most innovative solutions to solve problems for businesses. You get to be a part of it. - Hardly any hierarchy. You can walk up to the CEO anytime to talk about new ideas or if you are not happy with something. - Great food, fun team events
Cons
- Sometimes not having an org structure can make you wonder, who is doing what, especially if you are new. - If you are not A or A+, it is difficult for you to survive at Apigee. This doesn't mean working too many late hours or weekends, you need to be self motivated and should have the willingness to do whatever it takes.

Pros
Very employee friendly. Firmly believes customer success is Apigee's success which is so true in API industry. Great people/culture and challenging customer focused problems to solve. These two things really motivates me to go to work everyday. Free food, great location, benefits are awesome but are secondary to me. Unique challenges to overcome are - super scalable as well as compact product architecture suitable for public and private cloud, demanding mission critical customer base. Remote offices including Denver,London and Banglore are getting more attention.
Cons
Less focus on building awareness around APIs in general and its own brand. Some times fear of short term sacrifices delay the long term solutions.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I agree on the secondary importance of some of the benefits like food. I think you raise a really interesting question: "Do we spend too much time focusing on building awareness around APIs?" Perhaps the market is more mature than we give it credit for? Would love you to ask this question at a future all hands or perhaps post it in the Community as something for consideration and debate?
