I have been working at Backbase (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work environment, strong team, positive attitudes and company culture, international travel, strong ethics, cutting-edge product with a beautiful UX, one of a kind product in the marketplace, growing rapidly, great location in Midtown, reasonable working hours, start-up feel without the start-up hours, if you work hard you are rewarded. Incredibly transparent. Retention-focused. You will grow.

    Cons

Competitive Dutch Salaries (on the slightly lower end of the average).
Young company that is constantly rethinking it's structure.
Internal struggle between Ams HQ and American office.
Product is constantly evolving so it's difficult sometimes to stay on-top of the latest iteration and maintain "expert" knowledge.
"Sales-First" mentality can be as harmful as it is productive.
There will be difficult late nights (as there always is).
    R&D is mostly in Amsterdam.

    Advice to Management

Stay non-political and avoid Bureaucracy. The growth of unnecessary structure within the company cab be cannibalizing to the growth of individuals.

I worked at Backbase full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Growth organization, high potential in North America. Excellent people in key positions. Management team has the opportunity to make or break the organization.

    Cons

Shifting focus has hurt long-term prosperity in the US. Teams are willing to work, but are unsure of best practices and generally are out of sync with global peers. Management team has the opportunity to make or break the organization.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your professional services. Commit them to the Backbase delivery methodology and ensure their product knowledge is unmatched in the industry. Invest in your product and support. Take the weight off your PS team and partners.

    Pros

Good place to be in sale. Leadership excels at public image

    Cons

Suck to not be the sale guy, especially after the promise is sold and clients are left to face with the truth

    Advice to Management

I worked at Backbase full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some very dedicated, hard working and nice coworkers who can have fun
    Attempting to change the cons

    Cons

The demands by upper management can be tough and unforgiving. Corporate centric culture rather than focused on people. Small recognition given to those who put in the time, more about the company succeeding for the good of profits rather than self growth and learning. VERY focused on sales, the number game but disregard actual delivery. Personal life often overlooked and pushed to the side. Although a rather flat hierarchy, a lot of energy is put towards impressing sales and executives because they had the loudest voice and therefore the most power to fire/hire. Employees must expect direct conversations, small amounts of empathy and extended hours/personal time sacrifice.

    Advice to Management

Encourage people directly with strong language. Understand not everyone is into the sales/corporate success culture. Understand the different work cultures the business operates within around the world. Be honest and don't try to play on emotions.

    Pros

Free lunch, good healthcare, nice office space

    Cons

Below market pay, the lunches aren't really that good, and sometimes there is nothing to do but they make you sit at your desk anyway.

    Advice to Management

Pull out of the US. You're clueless about how to operate in the greatest nation on earth.

    Pros

The company is really focused on building a great company culture. They don't want to tell you they are great company like so many companies do. They want you to tell them how they can help you be great.

    Cons

Nothing to report at this time.
