Pros

Helping struggling kids and coworkers

Cons

I was laid off in the summer like most of the other students. I was not called back like most of my coworkers and wasn’t given an explanation.

Pros

You get to impact children who need reading assistance.

Cons

Beyond Basics says the mission is to end illiteracy but it's really all about the money. I worked for the company for several years and saw how number driven it became. You are always viewed as disposable to them. No professional development and a strong office vs. field mentality. Very privileged people in the office who are completely out of touch with the community they serve. They just want to get another "seat in a chair" for funding. And they "tweak" the data to show the outcome that they want. The curriculum is weak as well and continues to be changed because the outcomes are so poor. Such a shame. There are better places to tutor, places that care about the staff and students more. They laid off most of their in office staff due to mismanaging funds and were very dishonest about it. So grateful I got away, my life is better now. Would not recommend!
