I have been working at BioFire Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This company has by far the best benefits of any company I have ever looked into working for. Management genuinely cares about the employees and invests in our success. It is well understood that happy employees work harder, and since we are treated so well, there are very high expectations.

    Cons

The workload and active projects seem overwhelming at times, and I have a hard time utilizing the 4 weeks of vacation because I am so busy.

    Advice to Management

Some managers have a hard time delegating and want to be involved in everything at the lowest level, but the number of active projects is much to high for that to be realistic. It would be a huge benefit if lower level employees felt more empowered to make day to day decisions. Remember that you hired your employees because they are competent and have the ability to act in the best interest of the company.

    Pros

Excellent pay and benefits! You can be a lazy worker and still get pay raise and promotion. Brown nose the right person and you will move up quick

    Cons

Lots of favoritism!!! It's who they want to promote. Management overlooked the hard working employees. Lazy people's gets away daily with slacking off on the line. Lead gets in trouble for telling team to work and most of the time it's the people that talk and not working that complained. Bad communication!!! Unorganized, not a professional work place! People horse around, throwing thing across the line. Lunch get eaten and management do nothing.

    Advice to Management

Step up the game and be a professional manager!!! Recognize the hard worker cause they worked double.

I worked at BioFire Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great technology. Chemistry division is progressive and diverse, the people are more friendly and professional than the Engineering group.

    Cons

Some people were fired prior to the acquisition by bioMerieux. This was probably done to sweeten the buyout deal, but they were instead accused of not meeting a vague "performance standard." Those who worked on the Film Array product (the only product the acquiring company was interested in) had an easier time meeting the standard. A few of the managers were attempting to hire only people that passed the local "religion test." I came across evidence of this but it is difficult to prove. I do NOT believe this was a company-wide policy, and it's my guess that those with this discriminatory attitude probably moved over to the "Biofire Defense" offshoot company rather than staying with "Biofire Diagnostics".

    Advice to Management

Engineering group needs to work well with other groups and develop better communication skills. Also understand that an engineering process that has more documentation, procedures, testing, etc. will take more time up front but save time in the long run by preventing mistakes. Some discriminatory hiring was going on (probably unbeknownst to main management), and that needs to be stopped.

The workload can sometimes be overwhelming.

    Pros

Off-Fridays, 401k, flexible hours, cool products. Good place to get experience before looking for better-paying opportunities.

    Cons

Compensation is far below current market in some departments. HR provides unrealistic salary brackets and job comparisons when discussing salaries.

    Advice to Management

    Better pay.

I worked at BioFire Diagnostics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work week hours. You get every other Friday off. Plenty of vacation time. Very good 401k. Decent medical benefits. Coworkers are the best to work with. Excellent talent and ingenuity. The developers are top notch, project managers are awesome to work with to a degree.

    Cons

If you are a test engineer, you will have every project manager, associate director, director and senior director know better than you how to test software. They conform to the factory based test method. They wont let you deviate so don't try. Even with their extremely educated management, they seem to know little to nothing about Tacit and Explicit knowledge or ignore it outright because it doesn't fit into their outdated method. But aren't above informing you how a test case is to be written so that anyone can run it. (A terrible model that makes lazy testers, expensive test case documents, and crappy software)

    Advice to Management

If your software department is to grow to the next level, your management team must learn better how to approach a multitude of projects. It is still acting like a small shop and they must be seeing the big picture or they will become completely overwhelmed. They must pull back and stop micromanaging. They have too large a role in the nuts and bolts of development. They may have to start using real scrum and Agile processes to keep up. Separating software teams is a standard in the industry now as well as using targeted embedded teams. Your method of lumping your testers into one department because it seems to make sense... doesn't. You're innovation suffers and eventually you will not continue to maintain the projects.

    Pros

Very good wages for entry level work. Benefits are really top notch, really excellent. Work is tedious and adapting to the pace can be stressful/frustrating, but I wouldn't call it a 'hard' job. Very liberal company policies (no drug testing).

    Cons

The company growth spurt happened very fast and the culture seems to have suffered. Lack of professionalism, constant focus on speed manifests in a competitive rather than cooperative attitude amongst co-workers. Leads are overburdened with menial tasks which makes it difficult ask them for support. Many promotions are done in a somewhat shady way, oftentimes jobs are never posted, certain people are just kind of gradually maneuvered into promotions/lateral transfers.

    Advice to Management

Begin recognizing and rewarding the remaining leads and techs with a cooperative, team-focused attitude. Take complaints about bullying and discrimination seriously. Make training less of a gauntlet of shame for new trainees to encourage them to stay. Allow techs to take on more responsibility to free up leads to support new employees.

I have been working at BioFire Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits value at about a third of my salary. Work 9 days in ten. Get every other Friday off! 120 hours pto immediate on hire. 9% match 401k. Very good environment with great people.

    Cons

Other employees get away with some real crap that becomes a burden upon hard workers around them. Management is amazing and flexible, but they trust employees to a fault.

    Advice to Management

Don't let employees take advantage of you. Talk to them on an individual basis and threaten the privileges they take advantage of.
