Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Great company with awesome benefits and ability to move up

Nov 14, 2022 - Associate Customer Success Manager in Denver, CO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company culture is chill and though you are expected to put in hard work, you aren't expected to give 120% all of the time. The people are friendly, there are very few egos, and it is nice to believe in what you do.

    Cons

There is no 401k matching. Also, they keep shutting down the idea of a 4 day work week. Not really cons, but benefits that would truly make a company stand out.

    Avoid... Incompetency All Around

    Dec 1, 2022 - Software Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Great office - Perks

    Cons

    - The people that work at that company (managers and above) are straight up incompetent. I think my 18 year old sister could do a better job managing the business. They don't really do anything... period. - Nepotism for hiring and promotion. - Tech stack is utter garbage. Like below-level intern level garbage. - CEO + CTO is pretty weak in terms of skillset + personality. They are replacable. - Salary is laughable.

Truly building the plane while flying it

    Dec 1, 2022 - MM AE
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

It is a collaborative environment where most people try and help others and share messaging that is working. I also think the sales enablement team works very hard on being readily available to help with tools, learning content etc. awesome job Stephen and Justin.

    Cons

As a rep I find it difficult to be in a position to be successful or advance your career, unless you are content with working Mid Market for the duration of your sales career, which obviously is fine for some. When I say put in a position to succeed you are thrown into the fire. You are given a list of accounts, told to tier them and work them. Most tenured reps have fantastic relationships with partners and are hand fed opportunities while the rest of the reps struggle and quarrel over the few inbound leads that come in. I think the root of the problem is the constant hiring. The AE team is becoming SO large managers are now looking after teams with 14-16 AEs. With that many people per team there is no way you are going to get the guidance, feedback and coaching you need nor do you feel like you have the managers attention when speaking with them because they are juggling 16 others same problems. I don’t want to continuously bash but it feels like a house running out of room or beds that keeps adding tenants. I get wanting to expand but having the right mechanisms in place and a strong foundation is crucial. The hotline bling is ludicrous and the lack of SDR outbound support/alignment is shocking. If we are becoming an outbound shop, shouldn’t we look to bolster our SDR org? pay go opps, unwillingness to discount to competitor pricing and lack of willingness of our exec team to bite the bullet and build into large Platforms like ADP, Taleo etc are huge hurdles. Best of luck selling the dash while competitors have built in integrations.

    Changing for the worse

    Nov 4, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good Benefits Market Leader, Checkr is genuinely the best product for background checks Good work/life balance

    Cons

    1) No career path 2) Growing without a plan. The company just continues hiring without promoting internally, while not adjusting the systems to work for the new sudden growth. This leads to a lot more people getting a smaller piece of the pie, especially on the sales side. 3) Culture has completely changed with new executives. They recently brought in a bunch of high ranking people from outside the company to run things, and it's made it so that as an individual contributor, your voice will not be heard. If you want to assist them with what they want done, they'll listen. However, if you have any sort of issue, or if what's being done negatively impacts your work, they don't care. You have a bunch of high ranking execs making decisions without actually listening to the people doing the work. This has given Checkr a much more corporate feel and eliminated the ability to make any sort of real changes or impact, which is the most fun part of working at a startup. Rather than talk about things that concern people, all we hear about is "building your internal brand." This basically means to kiss up to people and bend the knee. They don't want individuals with their own thoughts and ideas, they just want people who fit a specific mold and will tow the line. Diversity isn't just about race, it's also about ideas and perspectives, and Checkr is failing on that front. Like someone else has said in another review, it's become cult-like. The positive reviews are from the bot-like employees (trust me, there are a lot here) that enjoy that. 4) Poor leadership. Even though they're trying to IPO and move off of being considered a startup, Checkr is still a startup in many ways, but only the bad ways. Systems wise, structure wise, there are so many things that are broken, but they're ignored in favor of continuing to build and grow the business. The internal systems are bad and messy, but there's zero effort to improve them. That comes down to bad leadership and is negatively affecting everyone else outside of the executive bubble. 5) High turnover. This is fairly recent, primarily surrounding new hires. People who have been here a while already have their relationships and networks to do the jobs well. But new people are being sold on a dream, only to get here and realize that they're not being set up for success at all.

    Utter Garbage

    Nov 9, 2022 - Software Engineer

    Pros

Free meals and nice office space.

    Cons

Management is extremely novice. I don't understand what skills they bring to the table and what they actually do on a daily basis. People are getting hired left and right due to nepotism. For instance, a candidate that completely failed the interview process was hired because she knows the SVP. I was actually in the meeting. The code stack is laughable. It's funny seeing faces of recent hired engineers when they first see the codebase. Utterly trash. The management and tech lead should be ashamed of themselves.
