I have been working at Development Gateway full-time

    Pros

Staff have a great deal of latitude, autonomy and room for initiative. Work with a lot of big players in international development. Great team to work with. Lots of travel. Opportunities for junior staff to take on a great deal of responsibility and do interesting things.

    Cons

The flipside of latitude is that you have to be able to take initiative. Workload can be a bit intense at times. Have to be ready to work with international teams/clients, which can affect schedules.

I have been working at Development Gateway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are awesome and friendly. Always lots of cake on birthdays, team lunches (in the nice casual way, not boring mandatory kind) The work we get to do is fulfilling and exciting. Good opportunities for travel. Is run like a social enterprise more than a non-profit, keeps things sustainable, and people working hard. You always feel like colleagues are working as hard as you are.

Pay and benefits are good for a non-profit, but not on par with private, but if money is what drives you then it's probably not a good fit anyway.

    Cons

The team is distributed across the world. half in D.C and the rest in Argnetina, Romania, and a couple scattered around. It makes travelling fun and exciting, but means a lot of tele-working and communicating instead of in person which takes some getting used to.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing and never settle when hiring.

I have been working at Development Gateway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Development Gateway is a great place to work. The organization treats its employees like family. The people working there are very dedicated to their jobs and the work is really interesting. There is a lot of opportunity to travel. The work you do really does make the world a better place.

    Cons

Back in 2011-2013, there were a lot of mistakes made by former employees. The employees are long gone, but the errors they made are still haunt the company. Thankfully, Development Gateway has gotten past these mistakes and is growing again.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the friendly atmosphere and keep treating people like they are an important part of organization.

I have been working at Development Gateway full-time

    Pros

    Many opportunities for travel
Challenging work and opportunities to lead projects
High degree of latitude within responsibilities (no micro-management)
    Excellent benefits
    Great organizational culture/office atmosphere
Non-hierarchical structure means that there is a lot of interaction between management and staff

    Cons

The workload can be challenging at times and travel can occasionally be excessive
High degree of latitude sometimes is accompanied by unclear expectations from management

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for learning, creatively and international travel with supportive management. Open office layout. Lots of opportunities for connecting with others. Flexible work schedule (most times). A start up style culture.

    Cons

Heavy work load. Not the best place for people that aren't self-starters. Often poor communication between senior management and staff.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to staff. Make it clearer to staff what the organization's strategy is. Sometimes feels like an aid agency.

    Pros

Good for young people who like to be sent to developing countries for adding a line to their resume and do not expect a career at Development Gateway.

    Cons

The company is basically dying. A series of mistakes by senior management lead to a bad financial situation. Many long-time employees have been fired, more will probably follow soon. Management is trying to act like nothing is happening but they are fooling only the kids they hired recently to bring costs down.

    Advice to Management

Resign while it's not too late. But then again it's probably too late.

I have been working at Development Gateway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Development Gateway is an organization that is in its best years yet. It offers young people great opportunities to get their "hands dirty" on interesting projects while also offering extensive experience in developing countries. The open work culture allows the staff to grow in their professional development. Senior management is extremely friendly, approachable and listen to staff concerns taking immediate action to rectify problems where possible. Over the past few years the environment has changed for the better with the organization moving forward in key areas that are relevant to today's technical challenges. If you are looking to learn and gain experience in the international development arena this is a great place to work.

    Cons

In the past the organization was too "top heavy" with too many management staff. However, this is now changing with the organization cutting out the "fat" and staffing with a young dynamic staff while at the same time keeping an equal measure of "experienced" staff in place.

    Advice to Management

    Continue down this road

I have been working at Development Gateway full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Decent salary/benefits
    -Some interesting colleagues
    -Location was perfect--close to metro

    Cons

I have worked in 5 different organizations. None comes close to the disfunction I experienced at DG.

    Advice to Management

There is one "manager" in particular that is sinking the entire ship.

    Pros

Good benefits, access to new technologies, working for public good, friendly atmosphere (when people are not stressed).

    Cons

People are under significant stress, several employees have been let go recently, there have been salary cuts. Utterly incompetent senior management doesn't control the situation.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should be replaced with people who better understand what organization is doing and more successful at fund raising.

    "stressful and not rewarding"

    Pros

Good benefits, great location, and good opportunity to work with donors

    Cons

Organizational issues, highly bureaucratic and slow in pace, very old management and very few innovators, management doesn't control staff and it is easier to stay home or to leave job at 2pm every day. Success or failure don't determine any consequence. At Development Gateway who doesn't do anything all day long has more chances to live peacefully.

    Advice to Management

Leave the space to the new generations and make it informal!
